Top Horror Movies for Friday the 13th

September 13th, 2024, marks another spooky Friday the 13th, and horror fans everywhere are looking to celebrate. What better way to glorify this unlucky day than to pull up a blanket and a large bucket of popcorn with some of the best horror films today? For those who are staying inside for their scary night, here is a list of movies you need to watch tonight for Friday the 13th.

    Alien (1979)

Horror enthusiasts all over the world have recognized Alien 1979 as one of the best horror films of all time. While its synopsis is simple, “After investigating a mysterious transmission of unknown origin, the crew of a commercial spacecraft encounters a deadly lifeform.” The film takes you on a much more in-depth journey of the human experience in one of the most horrifying ways possible—a deadly alien encounter.

The film was directed by Ridley Scott and starred Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, and John Hurtt. The franchise has been doing so well that they just released Alien: Romulus, which is the seventh movie within the franchise. The film has received an 8.5/10 on IMDb with almost one million ratings from unique users. Alien has won one Oscar along with multiple Saturn awards.

    A Quiet Place (2018)

A Quiet Place took audiences by storm on April 6th, 2018 when it was first released. The directorial debut by John Krasinski created a horrific world of utter silence or death. The eerie setting in dark material creates a wonderfully horrifying experience. The film stars Emily Blunt, John Krasinski, and Millicent Simmons. IMDb summarizes the film’s plot as “A family struggles for survival in a world invaded by alien creatures with ultra-sensitive hearing.” A Quiet Place has garnered over 600 thousand ratings with a score of 7.5/10, a movie that belongs on anyone’s Friday the 13th horror night movie watch list.

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

In 1984, West Craven released a horrific dream to movie audiences, and that nightmare was A Nightmare on Elm Street. The film was directed and written by Wes Craven and starred the likes of Heather Langenkamp, Johnny Depp, and Robert Englund. The film follows, “Teenager Nancy Thompson must uncover the dark truth concealed by her parents after she and her friends become targets of the spirit of a serial killer with a bladed glove in their dreams, in which if they die, it kills them in real life.”

Truly one of the most terrifying movies to date that makes the bumps in the night a little more unnerving. Of course, if you’re a fan of not just the day Friday the 13th but the movie franchise as well, then you will know that Freddy Krueger is one of Jason’s most iconic adversaries. The IMDb rankings place this film at a 7.4/10 with almost 300 thousand ratings.

    Friday the 13th (1980)

When making a list of movies to watch on Friday the 13th, it would almost be criminal to not put the original on the list. Director Sean S. Cunningham released the film as the start of the 80’s slasher movement and instilled Jason as one of the most iconic movie monsters of all time. The film starred Betsy Palmer, Adrienne King, and Jeannine Taylor.

The film’s plot summary is as follows: “A group of teenage camp counselors attempt to reopen an abandoned summer camp with a tragic past, but they are stalked by a mysterious, relentless killer.” A story arch that has bled its way into hundreds of other horror movies throughout the years. The film’s rankings are the lowest on the list at 6.4/10. However, Friday the 13th is a classic and a must-watch on tonight’s mysterious holiday.

No matter if you choose to celebrate Friday the 13th or not, these are iconic horror films that are important for any person who loves blood, guts, gore, fear, and death in movies.
