Zack Martin Urges Cowboys to Finish Stronger

    2024-09-14

The Dallas Cowboys remained in total control throughout the game against the Cleveland Browns, handing them their first loss of the season by a strong 33-17 opening win. Certainly, Zack Martin has something to be upset about. While the Cowboys emerged to a very strong start in the season opener, the thing Zack Martin wishes his team had taken away from it is the tendency to close out the game tighter, being allowed to hang around too long before sealing the victory.

Though the team had all the advantage in the first half, what gave the game a better chance than it ought to have was the edge they carried into the half. For Martin, this also presents an opportunity for a challenge toward improvement.

    Zack Martin’s Take on Offense

Martin believes that they did not push home all the opportunities that came their way. He says there was a time when the offense bogged down after halftime with multiple three-and-outs that shouldn’t have been the case. Instead of winning by lots early, the Cowboys let the Browns hang around so that the game is made unnecessarily close. Martin feels that the team had its chances to close it out and put the teams away with greater authority. His call to action is to be more aggressive than they have been when their opponents are on the ropes.

He said in his article that a kill shot was what the Cowboys had been missing—that important punch in the game that allows them to close out games when there is an opening. This attitude only builds on a larger sense within the Cowboys’ management to find better ways of managing the game. These comments from Martin speak directly to an overarching idea of football: that teams cannot win by simply starting well but must keep that going through the full game. For Martin, it means grabbing every opportunity for the wins to be decisive and sure.

    Martin Calls for Consistency

Looking ahead to their Week 2 game with the New Orleans Saints, Martin’s theme is again loud and clear. The Saints scored a season-opening 47 points, something that highlights how potent their offense can be. Martin would want it in its quest for victory; this has to be taken with a more decisive approach and cannot rely on field goals alone. Coming is the stronger team, and the Cowboys will need to implement Martin’s brash approach to avoid being locked into the same type of mistakes as last week.

The Cowboys had far too many three-and-outs in their final game, considering they dominated the first half of play. This type of fade into the second half has allowed the Browns to score a late touchdown to change the appearance of what was otherwise a commanding win into something closer than it was. Martin comments that this is the kind of adjustment the team needs to make if they want to lead the league with an early third quarter. Consistency and execution throughout the four quarters are the key.

    Conclusion

The final word from Zack Martin is to improve on closing stronger, which points towards a very important feature of the Cowboys that needs improvement. Of course, winning 33-17 is great, but what happened during the second half of the game calls for improvement. This push by Martin towards aggressive game closings is not just about winning but winning by huge margins. As they move forward with these adjustments, it will be crucial for the Cowboys to secure their place among the league’s elite teams. This season, finishing games with authority could be the key to their success.

I consider myself an ex-Cowboys fan of over 40 years. Almost like an ex-wife (mother of your children) who you truly loved, you want only the best, but she still does the things that caused the divorce. Cowboys fans, tell me if I'm wrong. In the beginning of the season, 1st, 2nd, or 3rd game, they have a blowout loss like this one against the Saints. Then, they'll get on a roll looking like world beaters. They will get into the playoffs and have another blowout loss like the one they had against the Saints, and that will be the end of the season. Jerry will act shocked. He will make some cheap moves in the off-season, washing, rinsing, and repeating until the next season, and the cycle begins again.
