Tom Holland Returning For "Spider-Man 4"
Some pre-production updates have been reported this week for Spider-Man 4, the fourth installment of the studio collaboration between Marvel and Sony. A new director and a familiar writing team will join star Tom Holland when he reprises his role as Peter Parker. Director Destin Daniel Cretto will lead the forthcoming film alongside writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. This movie is currently expected to premiere next year.
Spidey Updates for Tom Holland's MCU Return
Tidbits of Spider-Man 4 news have trickled out in recent months. In July this year, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige talked to CinemaBlend about the pre-production progress of the follow-up to 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home. He prepared fans for the likely departure of Jon Watts, the director who helmed all three previous entries in the franchise. "We love Jon. Jon did three of the best Spider-Man films ever for us," Feige said. "He's got lots of things going on now. So we'll probably be looking for somebody else, just because he's busy." This loss has now been confirmed, as Watts moved on to other projects, like becoming the showrunner of the upcoming Disney+ series Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.
This week, The Hollywood Reporterbroke the news that filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton is slated to take over for Watts in directing Tom Holland's next turn as Peter Parker. Cretton is a tried-and-tested MCU veteran, having previously directed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021). It's not a complete changeup behind the scenes, however; returning writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, who have been responsible for the three solo Tom Holland Spider-Man outings, will be working with the new director.
Tom Holland As the Loneliest Peter Parker
There are rumors in the air about the possible plotlines for the fourth movie. After the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, in which Doctor Strange cast a complicated spell at Peter's request, everyone in-universe forgot that Peter Parker and Spider-Man ever existed. Audiences continue to speculate on how Peter will overcome this personal calamity.
In a Discord Q&A with The Cosmic Circus, scooper Alex Perez said outright that the curse would be "explored more, and eventually broken." While not wholly surprising, this lends further credence to the idea that Tom Holland will maybe play the saddest iteration of Spider-Man yet. Imagine Doctor Strange being your only friend.
Final Thoughts
Spider-Man 4 is expected to continue the franchise's successful run as the latest entry in the groundbreaking partnership between Marvel and Sony. Setting aside the electric performance that Tom Hardy continually puts in as Eddie Brock in the Venom series, Sony-exclusive Marvel projects have had a spotty history at best. The Tom Holland movies have proved to be charming and reliable hits, and audiences always welcome their friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.
