September 2024 Box Office Breakdown: "Beetlejuice," "Deadpool," and "Speak No Evil" Dominate
1 days ago
Though summer is almost over, the box office numbers continue to grow weekly as new releases hit theaters. With 2024 already being a massive year of blockbusters and independent hits, it's perhaps surprising to many moviegoing audiences that there are still many big movies to come before the end of the year. Here is everything you need to know about the box office numbers for September 2024 so far.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
Directed by Tim Burton, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was released on September 6th, 2024, to theaters all over the world. The movie follows multiple generations of the Deetz family as the return to their Winter River home, which is still haunted by Beetlejuice. Lydia Deetz's life gets turned upside down when her daughter Astrid accidentally opens the portal to the afterlife. The film stars Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Katherine O'Hara, and of course Jenna Ortega.
On its premiere day, the film accrued over $41 million in the domestic box office. Across the three days of its opening weekend, the film had earned over $110 million. After one week of its release, the film has accrued over $260 million worldwide and almost $190 million at the domestic office. As of right now, the film ranks number 12 on the 2024 highest box office earnings list, with no signs of it slowing down any time soon.
Deadpool and Wolverine
Deadpool and Wolverine, an absolute money-making monster of a movie, has finally slowed down in September. The movie was only at the top of the box office for the first four days before it was overtaken by Reagan on September 5th and then by Beetlejuice Beetlejuice for the rest of the month so far. Regardless of it slowing down, Deadpool And Wolverine has still been able to garner about $30 million in the first half of September.
Leaving the total worldwide box office number at just over $1.3 billion, right underneath Inside Out 2, which has grossed $1.6 billion worldwide. The massive success of Disney and Marvel has placed them at number 2 for the year 2024 on the list of highest earnings at the box office.
Speak No Evil
Directed by James Watkins, Speak No Evil was released on September 13th, 2024. Speak No Evilfollows a family who is invited to spend a whole weekend in a deserted countryside home. As their vacation continues, they realize that the family that invited them is harboring a very dark secret. The film stars James McAvoy, Mackenzie Davis, and Scoot McNairy. Across 5,000 ratings from the site's users, the movie has a score of 7.2 out of 10 on IMDb. During the film's domestic opening, it had made just over $11.5 million. As of right now, the film sits at the 72nd spot on 2024's highest box office earnings rankings, earning $21 million worldwide in just three days.
Final Thoughts
2024 has been a massive year for the box office, with multiple records being broken, like how Inside Out 2 became the highest-grossing animated film or how Deadpool and Wolverine became the highest-grossing R movie. Both of these records are not only happening within the same year, but within the same summer of each other. 2024 is not over, and many more releases have yet to come before 2025, so let's see if the last three months of this year can keep up with the momentum the summer film season has built up.
