Kansas City Chiefs Postgame Reactions To Week 2 Victory Over The Bengals

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes didn’t play his best game, but he made timely plays when needed. Thanks to running back Isiah Pacheco, Carson Steele, and Rashee Rice stepping up offensively, the team did just enough. Harrison Butker capped it off with a walk-off 51-yard field goal, staying perfect on both extra points and field goals.

Below are postgame reactions from Chiefs players as they prepare for their Week 3 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, September 22, at 8:20 p.m. EDT.

    Kansas City Chiefs Offense Quotes

Head coach Andy Reid opened the conference discussing injuries, as usual, mentioning that running back Isiah Pacheco is being evaluated for an ankle injury. He also thanked the fans, saying, “Thank you to our fans—they did a great job today and hung with us through our highs and lows. They stayed right with us. Can’t say enough about Butker and that kick. He’s so reliable, and we appreciate how he goes about his business. As good of a kicker as he is, he’s an even better person.”

Patrick Mahomes added to the praise of Butker after the game, saying, “He’s an amazing kicker, someone who can go out there in those pressure-packed situations and make those big kicks. It’s something you love to have.”

Kansas City Chiefs backup left tackle Wayne Morris also spoke about his touchdown play. “I knew it was coming to me. When I lined up, I saw they were playing gaps, and the guy was lined up over me. They left me completely uncovered. I just kept telling myself, ‘When you get out there, just be cool. Don’t be nervous. Just catch the ball.’” Morris followed through and scored the first touchdown of his NFL career.

    Chiefs Defense Quotes

Safety Chamarri Conner spoke about his scoop-and-score play. “We were in coverage, and I saw the quarterback running around. The defensive lineman made a great play on the ball. I just saw the ball bounce on the ground, so I scooped it up. I thought they were going to call it back, but you always take it to the end zone and play through the whistle.”

Conner also discussed the defense’s adjustments against the Bengals’ tight ends, who gave the Kansas City Chiefs trouble all day. “Throughout the game, we definitely had to make adjustments to slow those guys down and match what they were doing. I feel like we did a good job making those adjustments and coming back out to play.”

    Chiefs Special Teams Quotes

Harrison Butker, at the podium, spoke about the close nature of games between the Kansas City Chiefs and Bengals. “I know, they’re all very tight. This game reminded me of the 2022 AFC Championship game. I think that was a 48-yard, right-hash kick to win it in the same direction.”

Butker also explained how he stays calm in high-pressure, game-winning situations. “During practice, I always try to put a ton of pressure on myself. Coach Reid and Coach Toub do a great job with that. If I can make my set of eight kicks on Wednesday and Thursday feel like game-winners, nothing should be different when the moment comes during a game.”

    Final Thoughts

It was another sloppy game for both the Kansas City Chiefs offense and defense, but each side of the ball made enough timely plays. Big catches, scoring drives, and key defensive stops paved the way for the special teams unit, led by Harrison Butker, to seal the victory and give the Chiefs their second win of the season.

Now, the team will reset and prepare for their Sunday night matchup against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 3. The Kansas City Chiefs will aim to clean up its mistakes, play more efficiently on offense, and tighten up its defense. However, if needed, the special teams will be ready to secure another win, as they have time and again.
