Ever since their debut in the 90s, the Power Rangers have been heroes who use their powers to protect the planet from the universe's most evil beings, including diabolical villains, monsters, and armies of identical foot soldiers. The manga and anime series Go! Go! Loser Ranger offers a reversed take on the common tale. The series brings forth a reality where the Power Rangers are not what they seem.

    Super Sentai And Power Rangers

Go! Go! Loser Ranger stems from two tokusatsu franchises: Super Sentai and Power Rangers. The two entertainment programs revolve around a team of color-coded heroes who act as protectors of Earth and fight off monsters sent by the main villain. Their battles often end with the Rangers using giant robots to finish their foes. Both franchises have spawned numerous series and movies that appeal to various audiences. This attraction typically comes from the fact that each Ranger/Sentai group has a distinct theme.

The Ranger/Sentai team in Go! Go! Loser Ranger does not appear to have a theme; however, they fit the criteria of being a collection of color-coded heroes. They are an original team that are separate from both major franchises and lack resemblances to any canon team. Nevertheless, their presence is enough to draw in the Sentai/Ranger fans as new readers and viewers.

The Go! Go! Loser Ranger Story

The story of Go! Go! Loser Ranger began 13 years ago when monsters attacked Earth. The Villainous Army sought to conquer the planet but met resistance from the Dragon Keepers. Since then, the evil monsters have attacked and faced the quintet of heroes every Sunday since then. Their fights even take place in front of massive crowds of people. The Dragon Keepers show up and defeat the monsters, receiving much praise from humanity; however, there is a dark truth behind these conflicts, hidden from the entire world.

The Dragon Keepers defeated the Villainous Army during the first year. They conquered the army's commanders and imprisoned all the surviving monsters. Now, the Dragon Keepers use their captives to put on weekly shows to entertain humanity. They also do this to maintain their celebrity prestige and position of power.

Go! Go! Loser Ranger Story Continued

The events of Go! Go! Loser Ranger begin when a Duster, one of the foot soliders of the Villainous Army, decides to rebel. Known as D, he escapes from prison and vows to destroy the Dragon Keepers. D gets the idea to infiltrate their organization and signs up for a trainee program. He eventually meets two new allies in his revenge: Hibiki Sakurama and Yumeko Suzukiri. Hibiki knows about the Keepers' corruption but desires to rehabilitate the Keepers, while Yumeko has a grudge against the Dragon Keepers and is more than happy to help D get his revenge.

    Life as a Duster

Dusters can shapeshift, and the Keepers have them become the monsters for the show. They can also regenerate from lethal wounds, essentially making them immortal. These two powers give the Dragon Keepers a limitless supply of monsters to fight. This loop is essentially a form of inhuman torture, emphasizing how cruel the Keepers are.

    Final Thoughts

Go! Go! Loser Ranger explores some interesting tropes. For example, the battles performed for the public are metaphors for the Sentai/Ranger formula. Sentai heroes fight a new monster every episode, similar to how the Keepers do weekly. Their battles are even equivalent to the gladiatorial combat of ancient Rome. The Keepers' monsters are slaves used for public entertainment, like Roman gladiators. Despite the cruel undertones, Go! Go! Loser Ranger is still entertaining and worth a watch.

The Go! Go! Loser Ranger anime derives from the manga of the same name. Produced by Yostar Pictures, the show is one season long with 12 episodes in total. The show is available on Disney+ worldwide and on Hulu in the United States. An English language adaptation of Go! Go! Loser Ranger was released months ago; a second season has been announced and will premiere in 2025.
