Joe Castiglione has been heard for decades by loyal Red Sox fans earning their respect with his originality, exuberance, and years of dedication. If you ever listened to a game on the radio, or when you went to visit your aunt who always had the games over the radio in her garage, or the barber your father went to, or the deli on Main St. who always had the games on in the background while making your Italian sub, Joe Castiglione is apart of the DNA of New England sports fans.

The Boston fans have grown up listening to his enthusiasm, and passion for the team, for the city, and the heart of Red Sox Nation. Before anyone makes any conversation about who comes next, a moment, or moments to reflect on what an outstanding service Joe Castiglione has provided to the city. How much he has contributed to the experiences that have been had for the last 42 Red Sox seasons. He has touched the lives of the community in remarkable ways just by showing up and being consistently there. If they won or lost, one thing Red Sox Nation could always count on was Joe Castiglione.

Meaningful Career

Joe Castiglione joined the Red Sox in 1983 and has worked with Ken Coleman, Bob Starr, Jerry Trupiano, Dave O’Brien, Will Flemming, Sean McDonough, and Lou Merloni, to name just a few. He was honored with a ceremony in 2022 at Fenway Park for his 40-year career with the Red Sox. Although growing up a Yankees fan, Boston stole his heart long ago. The following year he was announced on the Baseball Hall of Fame ballot and won the 2024 Ford C. Frick.

At the Baseball Hall of Fame induction ceremony Castiglione’s heartfelt speech left no dry eyes in the house. He was clear about the gratitude he felt for his wife and family. An honorable member of the sports world and an even more integral family man, the retirement of Castiglione is a hard loss for Red Sox fans but a huge win for his endlessly supportive family.

Saying Goodbye To A Boston Legacy

It is Castiglione’s voice that remains in the hearts of many, known for his use of the famous line, “Can you believe it?!” In the 2004 World Series win for Boston, which served as some Bostonians’ best moment of their entire lives, (ask them), Castiglione was the one who delivered the message with his use of his legendary phrase.

The greatest moment in New England in 86 years, the moment the curse was broken was music to the ears of all Red Sox Nation. When the memory is revisited for fans, Joe Castiglione’s voice will echo for generations to come. When future grandparents tell their grandchildren at Sunday dinner about the Curse of The Great Bambino, they will enthusiastically wave their arms, shouting Joe Castiglione’s classic line,

“Can you believe it?! Can you believe it?!”

Laughing gleefully, reliving the memory creates palpable excitement, winding the children up, to make it then an unforgettable memory for the children. Joe Castiglione will forever be a major part of the colorful richness that is the history of the Boston Red Sox.
