Elder Scrolls Online Cross-Platform Limitations

Over a decade ago, Bethesda Softworks released The Elder Scrolls Online, an MMO based on their epic fantasy saga. Millions of players worldwide could explore Tamriel's world alongside other gamers through the game. The game has earned a massive player base and the acclaim of fans.

One question that many players ask before setting foot on servers is whether or not the multiplayer game offers cross-platform play. With so many different consoles separating players, critics and gamers consider this a deciding factor in their investment in the game. Here is a breakdown of The Elder Scrolls Online's status regarding cross-platforming.

Unfortunately for fans, Elder Scrolls Online does not offer cross-platform services between consoles. According to the ESO guide site Hack the Minotaur, the game does not offer cross-platform play. Therefore, those on the PC, Xbox, and PlayStation servers will be apart. Furthermore, no plans have ever been discussed by the developers.

For reference, many other major MMOs, such as Final Fantasy XIV and Destiny 2, use cross-platform play, and many gamers consider this feature an industry standard. This feature is useful as it allows large sections of the player base to connect and share the adventure. This has always been a key selling point for MMOs, and lacking cross-platform can impede this for some.

Despite this, this limitation does not completely divide the MMO's player base. Bethesda does offer cross-platform play between consoles of the same family. For example, PlayStation 4 and 5 players can share the experience. Hopefully, Bethesda will one day bridge the servers even further.

The MMO of the Franchise

For those unaware, The Elder Scrolls Online is an ongoing MMO based on the successful series. Following World of Warcraft's footsteps, Bethesda took the sprawling fantasy universe they created and turned it into an entire MMORPG. This was inevitable given the scale of the two-decade-old IP and its continent of iconic locations.

The first arc of Online followed the invasion of one of the most infamous Daedric Princes, Molag Bal. He attempted to bring his realm of Coldharbour into the material realm. The player characters had to battle him, reclaim their soul, and fight alongside one of the three factions vying for control over the continent.

While the MMO had a troubled launch, it soon found its way. One of the smartest steps was transitioning from a subscription-based model to the "Tamriel Unlimited" feature, which made the game free to play while offering in-game purchases and optional bonuses. Furthermore, the many expansions released further built upon the sizeable franchise lore.

The Future of the Game

This year, The Elder Scrolls Online reached its tenth anniversary. For this momentous occasion, the developers spared no expense. They hosted several in-game and in-person events, rewards for players, and the Gold Road expansion. This plotline features a new, forgotten Daedric Price arriving on Tamriel and unlocking a questline for players in Cyrodiil.

However, the matter of The Elder Scroll VI remains. Despite Bethesda announcing the game six years ago, barely any information was released. Furthermore, with so much of Tamriel explored by the MMO, less and less room remains for exploration. However, their work with Elder Scrolls Online has demonstrated the company's ability to maintain and keep the franchise fresh.

Furthermore, The Elder Scrolls Online has slowed in its expansions over the past few years. While the game has proven its resilience, it's unlikely that Bethesda will plan anything game-changing for it at this point. Therefore, it remains unlikely that the MMO will become cross-platform.
