VR Shooter Mannequin Launches on Quest, Steam VR

Asymmetrical VR shooter Mannequin has exited early access and launched its first full release on the Meta Quest and Steam VR stores. The game features 2v3 hide-and-seek mechanics, with two agents hunting down three shapeshifting "Mannequins", who have the ability to hide in plain sight as human statues. The game is on sale on Steam until 09/19.

Mannequin was in early release since June of this year, launching in full on 09/13. The gameplay centers around two so-called "Agents" using handheld scanners to track and shoot the stealthy Mannequins before they're able to ambush the Agents and freeze them with a single touch. Shooting humans instead of Mannequins jams an Agent's gun, giving the Mannequin a chance to strike. Other objectives in the game force players to gather at set locations, creating opportunities for both sides to coordinate strikes against the opposing team.

The game comes with four full maps, custom matches including an "Infected" mode, and Steam/Quest cross-play. A free update including a fifth map is set to release later in September. The current release also includes visual enhancements for Quest 3, including material roughness, stronger reflections, increased LOD distances, and improved normal maps and first-person POVs when posing as Mannequins.

Early reviews on the Quest store are positive, with 85% of over 240 reviews garnered so far giving the game a 5-star rating. Users have praised the depth of strategy, speed of gameplay, and the welcoming community of players. Reviews are coming in as "mostly positive" on Steam VR. Players have also noted that the cross-play availability makes for a ready pool of users at most times of day, allowing them to jump in and play a few rounds whenever they want.

Mannequin is the brainchild of Fast Travel Games, a studio and publisher comprised of industry veterans from games like Battlefield and Angry Birds. The Stockholm-based outfit has already brought several top-tier VR experiences to market, including Into the Radius, and Vampire: Masquerade - Justice. Earlier this year the studio also announced a new VR FPS, Action Hero, that features dynamic speed-ramping action and a bombastic tongue-in-cheek narrative.
