Jerry Jones Sets High Stakes for Mike McCarthy’s Future with Cowboys

Mike McCarthy enters the 2024 season under tremendous scrutiny. He’s got a lot on his shoulders, for sure, given that his contract expires after this year. Therefore, he needs to deliver the Cowboys, for sure, with playoff success to seal his chances of getting another contract. It’s a feeling that McCarthy already shares, as Owner Jerry Jones has already indicated that McCarthy’s future with the team largely depends on how he performs during the playoffs.

    Jerry Jones Optimistic

Jerry Jones is optimistic that Mike McCarthy will make it count for his contract year. This attitude could help motivate McCarthy to be great or intensify the pressure he has that serves as a coaching hindrance. It is all on McCarthy, and every win or loss will trigger debate about whether McCarthy will be out of town by the end of the season.

The heat has been on since a dismal Week 2 loss at the hands of the New Orleans Saints. This loss was at home, and it has already stoked rumors that might end McCarthy’s tenure with the Cowboys. In the aftermath, Jones spoke with McCarthy about how his wins in the regular season would not suffice to get him a new deal.

McCarthy does have a good regular-season record, though. He led the Dallas Cowboys to a 12-5 mark each of the last three seasons and is 43-26 overall with the team. Where McCarthy has been an issue is his postseason record. McCarthy’s postseason record is just 1-3. Jerry Jones tells me what’s required for McCarthy to hang around past this season, winning in the playoffs. Winning the regular season is not enough. Rather, it will depend upon his potential ability to maneuver the team deep into the playoffs whether or not McCarthy might be signed long-term.

    Mike McCarthy’s Turn

McCarthy is all too aware of the high stakes. One side sees criticisms abound for his team’s failed match against the Saints. Another side sees enhancing its playoff performance as what matters to him. That pressure will tell whether it makes McCarthy to great heights or is a stumbling block. The verdict is still out on that.

Mike McCarthy is charged with drawing a very definitive line in the sand before owner Jerry Jones, wins in the postseason or gets ready to be shown the door. Given that McCarthy enters the final year on a four-year contract, his future with the Cowboys hangs entirely upon ensuring that this is the season that culminates in postseason success. Those games down the stretch will speak volumes as to whether McCarthy can deliver on the great expectations placed before him and stay within the organization.

Why these owners keep circulating these none winning coaches around the league instead of finding new talent. Green Bay let him go and Jerry picked him right up, it was a reason for the departure. He had a coach the players responded to and respected with Quinn.

The coach? That’s who you have high standards for. How about the QB you’re paying $60 million to. How about you hold him to high standards because I haven’t seen any improvement over the years
