PSG Vs Girona : UEFA Champions League Preview, Prediction & Match Details

The UEFA Champions League kicks off its first round of matches this week, with Girona set to face an impressive PSG side in a fascinating clash at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday. Both teams boast talented players and will be eager to win in this match.

    PSG vs Girona: Preview

Girona are set to make their debut in Europe’s top club competition as they travel to face Ligue 1 giants PSG at the Parc des Princes. Despite Girona’s impressive rise, they will face a tough challenge against one of the world’s biggest clubs.

PSG have started the season strongly, winning all four of their opening league matches. They’ll be aiming for a similar performance in the Champions League when they host Michel’s Girona. Paris came into the match following a dominant 3-1 victory against Brest over the weekend, boosting their confidence.

Date & Time: September 18, 2024 at 8 pm UK

    Stadium: Parc des Princes

Team News, Stats & Head To Head

    PSG

PSG are still without Goncalo Ramos, Presnel Kimpembe, and Lucas Hernandez, all sidelined with long-term injuries. Additionally, first-choice goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma is out with a thigh injury sustained in the win over Brest, which could see summer signing Matvey Safonov make his debut. Midfielders Warren Zaire-Emery and Vitinha, who missed the Brest match, are doubtful and will be evaluated before kickoff. This could result in Lee Kang-in, Fabian Ruiz, and Joao Neves retaining their spots in midfield.

Luis Enrique may consider recalling Marquinhos and William Pacho to the center-back positions, replacing Milan Skriniar and Lucas Beraldo. In attack, Bradley Barcola, PSG’s top scorer with four goals in four games, may join forces with Ousmane Dembele and either Marco Asensio or Kolo Muani.

    Girona

For Girona, Ricard Artero and Jastin remain out with injuries. Yangel Herrera, who missed the loss to Barcelona due to an adductor issue, is also uncertain for Wednesday’s match.

Oriol Romeu, who was ineligible to face his former club Barcelona, will be available to play against PSG and is expected to start in a three-man midfield alongside Ivan Martin and 19-year-old Jhon Solis, with Donny van de Beek once again serving as an option off the bench.

Abel Ruiz is likely to continue as the central striker, ahead of new signings Bojan Miovski and Stuani. Meanwhile, Portu, Bryan Gil, Viktor Tsygankov, and Arnaut Danjuma will compete for starting positions on the wings.

    Head-to-Head

PSG have never faced Girona in an official UEFA Champions League fixture before and will need to adjust to this new opponent on Wednesday. PSG have won their first match against six of their last seven new opponents in the Champions League, although they experienced a 4-1 defeat to Newcastle United in their most recent instance.

Out of the last 28 teams that have played away games against PSG in the Champions League, only one has managed to secure a victory—Manchester United, who won 3-1 in March 2019. Since the start of the 2012-13 season, PSG have lost just one of their 36 home matches in the group stages of the Champions League.

    Possible Starting Lineup

PSG: Safonov; Hakimi, Marquinhos, Pacho, Mendes; Lee, Ruiz, Neves; Dembele, Kolo Muani, Barcola

Girona: Gazzaniga; Frances, Lopez, Blind, Gutierrez; Martin, Romeu, Solis; Tsygankov, Ruiz, Danjuma

    PSG vs Girona: Prediction

As the home team, PSG are the favorites to win this match, given their squad’s superior quality compared to Girona. Nevertheless, due to Girona’s significant improvements in their gameplay, they are anticipated to put up a strong challenge.
