New York Mets Offense Powers Them To 10-1 Victory

The Washington Nationals got the scoring started early on tonight at Citi Field. Left Fielder James Wood grounded into a fielder's choice to get Washington on the board first in the top of the third inning. The New York Mets offense then responded by scoring 10 unanswered runs. Shortstop Luisangel Acuna tied the game up in the bottom of the third inning thanks to an RBI double. He would go on to add a solo home run in the eighth inning. First Baseman Pete Alonso added an infield single scoring two runs and Third Baseman Mark Vientos hit a Sacrifice Fly to cap off a four run third inning.

New York's scoring did not stop there as they scored a run in the fourth and fifth innings to secure a 10-1 victory. Alonso added a three-run home run and finished the night with a whopping five RBI. This tied Alonso's season high. The Mets scored in five of eight half innings this evening. Will the New York Mets be able to carry this momentum into Wednesday's contest?

New York Mets Increase Wild Card Lead

The New York Mets entered tonight's game with a one-game lead over the Atlanta Braves for the third and final National League Wild Card spot. Atlanta lost 6-5 earlier tonight to the Cincinnati Reds and New York now holds a two-game lead with only 11 games remaining in the 2024 regular season. New York holds a 56.2% chance to make the MLB Playoffs according to ESPN.

New York's pitching was also the story tonight as Starting Pitcher Tylor Megill tossed six scoreless innings. The only run he surrendered was unearned due to an error by Acuna in the third inning. Relief Pitcher Adam Ottavino was able to escape a bases-loaded jam in the top of the seventh. The New York Mets stifled the Nationals offense by limiting them to only four hits tonight.

Looking Forward To Tomorrow's Game

The final game of this three-game set will pit Washington Nationals Starting Pitcher DJ Herz(4-7, 3.70 ERA) against New York Mets Starting Pitcher Jose Quintana(9-9, 3.41 ERA). Herz is coming off a solid start last week against the Miami Marlins. He surrendered one earned run over five innings of work to secure the victory. Herz has faced the New York Mets twice this season and has had a poor start and a great start. He has surrendered five earned runs over 9.2 innings.

Quintana has been spectacular over his last two starts against the Cincinnati Reds and Philadelphia Phillies. He has tossed 13.2 scoreless innings and punched out 10. He will look to keep up his tremendous pitching tomorrow evening against a sluggish Nationals offense. Quintana has dominated Washington in two previous starts with 14 scoreless innings. The New York Mets will go for the series sweep on Wednesday.
