Juan Soto and Aaron Judge Power Yankees To Win In Seattle

Juan Soto hit his 40th home run of the season and Aaron Judge drove in four runs to power the New York Yankees to an 11-2 win over the Seattle Mariners in Seattle Tuesday night. The Yankees took no time in pouncing on the slumping Mariners. Gleyber Torres singled to lead off the game. Soto doubled to center to send Torres to third. Judge then doubled to left to score both Torres and Juan Soto and the Yankees’ scoring barrage had begun.

The Yanks scored two in the first, two in the second, two in the fourth, one in the fifth, three in the sixth, and for good measure added another run in the ninth. The game was never in doubt. Will New York be able to carry this momentum into future games?

The Juan Soto and Aaron Judge Show

Juan Soto was 2-of-2 on the night with a home run, three runs, and two RBI. Judge, hitting behind Soto as usual, was 2-of-4 at the plate with four RBI and a run of his own. Juan Soto’s home run in the fourth inning marked his 40th of the season which continued to stretch his single-season high in dingers from last season’s 35 with the San Diego Padres.

The offensive performance was even more impressive considering that the Mariners starting pitcher, Bryan Woo, entered the game with a sub 3.00 ERA and a sub 1.00 WHIP. In T-Mobile Park, Woo was 5-1 with an opponents batting average of .188. Even with the outing against the Yankees, Woo’s home ERA is 2.70. None of that past pitching excellence deterred the "Bronx Bombers."

    Soto Joins the Yankees' Elites

With his 40th home run of the season in his age-25 season, Juan Soto joined Joe DiMaggio, Lou Gehrig, Mickey Mantle, his teammate Aaron Judge, and Babe Ruth as the only Yankees to homer 40 times in a season at 25 or younger. Ruth, Judge, and Mantle would go on to surpass 50 round-trippers in 1920, 2017, and 1956 respectively. Except for Judge, who is still playing, all the others on the list have their numbers retired and are in Cooperstown. Juan Soto has joined the elite of the elites.

The Yankees' Odds Get Better Too

Earlier in the night, the San Francisco Giants helped out the Yankees by defeating the Baltimore Orioles by a score of 10-0. With the Orioles’ loss, the Yankees' win stretched their lead in the American League East to four games with 11 to play. Fangraphs’ playoff odds now give the Yankees a 94.8% chance to win the division, a 94.7% chance to earn a bye, and most significantly a 19.1% chance to win the World Series.

    On Tap Tonight

Tonight, Nestor Cortes will take the mound for the Yankees and will face off against Bryce Young of the Mariners in what should be a gem of a pitching duel. Then again, that was supposed to be the script last night.
