National Championships Abound for 3 Great Sports at OSU

National championships have become commonplace at Ohio State. Three very competitive non-revenue teams at Ohio State have recently won National Championships and may do so again this year. They are odd, undercover sports, but they will get their due here. They are synchronized swimming, a women’s sport, women’s pistol, and men’s volleyball. Like women’s hockey and football, they may win National Championships for Ohio State and deserve press.

    Championship Synchronized Swimming at OSU

Synchronized swimming (actually called artistic swimming) at Ohio State has won thirty-four national championships dating back to 1977. They won last year and may do so again this year. They are an absolute juggernaut. As per their schedule, they start on February 2, 2025, with the Jessica Black Invitational in Columbus. They swim against the University of Michigan at Michigan on February 11, 2025. They end their season with the United States National Championships on March 22 and 23, 2025, in Dallas, Texas. They should win their thirty-fifth national championship.

Their roster includes Marian Catahan, a senior; Lonie Corbeil, a freshman; Janneke Dirven, a freshman; Rikki Evans, a sophomore; Scarlett Finn, a freshman; Charlotte Gray, a junior; Hannah Heffernan, a senior; Keana Hunter, a freshman; Carmen Kawakami, a freshman; Sarah Levaro, a freshman; Daniella Molano Arango, a sophomore; Ayla O’Neil, a freshman; Lilly Ortiz, a junior; Ruby Remati, a junior; Angelie Roger, a sophomore; Maddie Romney, a sophomore; Venice Showda, a sophomore; Natalie Smith, a freshman; Emma Spott, a junior. They have a pretty young roster and have reloaded for more national championship runs.

    Championship Women’s Pistol at OSU

The Ohio State Women’s Pistol team has won four straight national championships and five of the last six. The women’s pistol team at Ohio State has won a total of eight national championships. The Ohio State women’s pistol team opens their season on October 12th against the Naval Academy. They shoot against the Naval Academy four times, and they shoot against the United States Military Academy at West Point four times as well. They play double headers against almost every team, and the National Championships are March 13-15 in Anniston, Alabama.

Their roster includes Panagiota Charalampous, a junior; Ariana Dickey, a sophomore; Jonayhon Dorston, a junior; Maya Gantsooj, a freshman; Marcus Klemp, a freshman; Ada Korkhin, a sophomore; Evan Langerak, a freshman; Abbie Leverett, a junior; Leah Mueller, a sophomore; Riya Salian, a sophomore; and Blaine Simpson, a freshman. This is also a very young team that has reloaded for a fifth consecutive national title. I listed the full pistol roster at Ohio State, men and women, but it is the women who have such a stellar championship record.

    Championship Men’s Volleyball at OSU

The men’s volleyball team at Ohio State has won three national championships: 2011, 2016, and 2017. They have won 18 conference titles. They are a perennial contender for the national championship. Their schedule for 2025 has yet to be announced, but they should start playing at the beginning of February. Last season the national championships were in Long Beach, California, starting on April 30th.

Their roster includes Grant Strong, a six-foot-two-inch junior, Owen Pickering, a six-foot-one-inch sophomore, Drew Hudson, a six-foot-two-inch freshman, Daniel Henwood Rodriguez, a six-foot-three-inch freshman, Shane Wetzel, a six-foot-seven-inch junior, Stanislaw Chacinski, a six-foot-seven-inch freshman, Will Sutphen, a six-foot-six-inch freshman, Daniel Hurley, a six-foot-eight-inch sophomore, Ben Putnam, a six-foot-five-inch sophomore, and Ben Hutchinson, a six-foot-eight-inch freshman.

Ian Nolte is a six-foot-five-inch freshman, Thomas Leahey is a six-foot-nine-inch graduate student, Kyle Teune is a six-foot-six-inch senior, Hudson Harris is a six-foot-eight-inch senior, Will McElveen is a six-foot-six-inch sophomore, Tyler Tharpe is a six-foot-eight-inch freshman, Cole Young is a six-foot-ten-inch senior, Jack O’Riordan is a six-foot-eight-inch freshman, Hayden Spears is a six-foot-eight-inch freshman, Aaron Grimm is a six-foot-seven-inch sophomore, and Kohl Kutsch is a six-foot-four-inch graduate student. This is a young team as well, and it should be competitive for the next four years.

    Conclusion

These are three potential National Championship teams at Ohio State: synchronized swimming, women’s pistol, and men’s volleyball. They routinely do not get the coverage they deserve as National Championship contenders. They are all young teams that should be competitive well into the future.
