All About Urizen from Devil May Cry in 2024

Urizen is the main antagonist of 2019’s Devil May Cry 5. This character was seemingly a new addition to the long-running series. This demonic king from hell showed up out of nowhere, and brutally made quick work of Devil May Cry 4’s protagonist Nero, and even of the series’ main character and icon for over 20 years, Dante. Who is Urizen? Where did he come from? Who is the character behind this demonic entity? Let’s dive into this mysterious newcomer’s backstory and lore.

Urizen’s Introduction

Urizen first appeared officially in Devil May Cry 5 and the supplementary materials from that game. Particularly, in Devil May Cry 5: Before the Nightmare, a prequel novel to the main game. There’s also Devil May Cry 5: Visions of V, a tie-in manga to the same game. Urizen appears after summoning a huge, demonic tower in Redgrave City. Fans of the series will be familiar with this area, which is the city that Dante and Vergil grew up in. Even more keen fans will know that this is the city where Dante got one of his aliases. In his detective work, Dante used the alias “Tony Redgrave” in his investigations, a nice little reference to his roots.

In Devil May Cry 5’s prologue, Urizen summons tons of demons in the middle of the city, causing havoc to run amok. It is at this tower that all of the characters in the series meet up to take him down. Dante, Trish, and Lady arrive at the scene and fight demons upon entering. Nero eventually gets there, admittedly, a tad later than the rest of them. All of the characters are easily beaten by Urizen, who is incredibly strong. Even Dante has defeated incredibly powerful demons from past games, like Mundus, Argosax, and Arkham. Urizen sends the Devil May Cry hunters away, and even breaks Dante’s sword, Rebellion in two.

Urizen’s Demonic/Human Origin

Later on in the story, it is revealed where Urizen came from. Vergil, the main antagonist of the third Devil May Cry game, and twin rival to Dante, was on the verge of death. He ended up stabbing himself with his sword, the Yamato, a weapon passed down to him from his father, the Legendary Dark Knight, Sparda. Vergil did this in an attempt to make himself even more powerful. This resulted in two separate entities being formed. One of them is V, a seemingly mysterious man with demonic connections, and tattoos. V represents the human side of Vergil.

The other entity was Urizen. Urizen opposingly represents the demonic side of Vergil and his pure lust for power. Once Urizen formed, he summoned the Qliphoth, a huge demonic tower from hell to Redgrave City. V in turn, immediately went to Devil May Cry, Dante’s mercenary shop, and hired him and his friends to defeat Urizen. Now that the story is all caught up, Dante eventually finds even more demonic power in him and can defeat Urizen.

Bury the Light

Urizen’s story ends with his defeat. After eating the fruit from the Qliphoth tree, and giving him ultimate demonic power, he challenges Dante. Dante, who has also found his own incredible new demonic strength, beats him. This crushes Urizen’s spirit. V shows up to the fight last minute, and finishes Urizen off, which ends up merging the two of them.

Vergil is now back. The alpha and omega. The legendary devil hunter’s greatest rival, and twin brother. Dante and Vergil enter into an incredible fight, that is stopped by Nero, Vergil’s son. Nero beats Vergil, and then Dante and Vergil go into the demon realm to seal the portal letting all the demons into the human world. On a happy note, Urizen’s tale ends, so Vergil can finally meet his son face to face, and spend more time with his estranged brother. Such a sweet family story, even a Devil May Cry.
