Former Manchester United Manager Opens Door to Sensational Return

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has expressed that he would gladly return as Manchester United’s head coach if given the opportunity. The 51-year-old has been out of a coaching role since being dismissed by the club in November 2021 following a 4-1 loss to Watford. While Solskjaer has been linked to roles in Turkey and Saudi Arabia, he has not taken up another managerial position since he departed from United during the 2021-22 season.

With Erik Ten Hag’s position under scrutiny due to the team’s lackluster form early in the season, Solskjaer revealed that he would “say yes every day of the week” if the club approached him for a second stint. Speaking at the Oslo Business Forum, he said, “If the family (Manchester United) asks, I would say yes every day of the week.” However, he acknowledged it felt inappropriate to discuss another manager’s role.

Solskjaer as a Manchester United Player and His Future

Solskjaer has also been linked with the Norwegian national team job and mentioned that he would be open to managing his country if the opportunity arises. He proudly stated, “I am a proud Norwegian and proud of where I come from,” and would be willing to engage in discussions when current manager Stale Solbakken steps down.

Solskjaer played for Manchester United from 1996 to 2007 and managed the club between 2018 and 2021, achieving 91 wins, 37 draws, and 40 defeats in 168 matches. Initially appointed as an interim manager, his success on the field led to a permanent appointment.

Despite recent struggles, journalist Rudy Galetti reports that Erik ten Hag’s job remains secure, though club officials expect significant improvements, starting with the upcoming Premier League match against Tottenham Hotspur. United currently sit 11th in the league table with seven points from their first five matches. Although unbeaten in their last four games, they have drawn their most recent two against Crystal Palace and FC Twente despite creating enough chances to win both.

Erik Ten Hag’s Uncertain Future at Manchester United

With Erik Ten Hag now facing increasing pressure after just three wins in United’s first eight games of the season, Solskjaer has stated he would not dismiss the possibility of returning to manage the club if asked. He said he would be open to discussions when current coach Stale Solbakken steps down, likely after the 2026 World Cup campaign.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, 51, has been out of management since being dismissed by Manchester United in November 2021 after nearly three years in charge. He was initially appointed interim manager in December 2018 following José Mourinho’s departure.

Despite leading United to a second-place finish behind Manchester City during the COVID-affected 2020-21 season, Solskjaer failed to win any silverware and was sacked after a poor run of form, which included six defeats in 11 games and a 5-0 loss to Liverpool at home.
