Clueless Chicago Bears’ OC Claims Balance 1st

Chicago Bears fans want truth and action. Chicago Bears fans want to see play calling that accentuates the strengths and skillsets of the personnel on the field. Calling plays for RB D’Andre Swift to run the ball on 4th down in the red zone does neither. Calling pass plays that take longer than 2.5 seconds to develop does neither. The O-line can’t get a push or pass block longer. What’s Shane Waldron saying about it?

A reporter in a week 4 presser asked Chicago Bears’ OC Shane Waldron about his desired identity for the offense. Waldron responded with the ultimate pre-programmed coach-speak nonsense alluding to his ideal offense having a perfect marriage between the run and the pass, blah-blah-blah.

How about telling the truth? How about recognizing that the *actual* identity of the Chicago Bears offense differs greatly from your desired offense? The Chicago Bears offense found its identity in the passing game against the Colts and the Bears would have won if it wasn’t for your dream of a balanced offense.

Players respond well to honesty. Players are not stupid, they know what is working well and what is not. Players respect coaches who challenge them earnestly on the aspects of their game that need work while putting the team’s needs above all else.

The Chicago Bears’ run game has been broken through the first three weeks. Waldron said, “The thing that we’re working on relentlessly is getting our run game going, improving in that area so we can play a balanced game.” Yes, Shane – the run game needs a lot of work, but to say that your primary focus is balance is a disservice to the Chicago Bears.

The Chicago Bears Need a Change

Shane Waldron and the Chicago Bears have lost the luxury of time that comes with winning football games. The Bears don’t need to beat a dead horse of a run game that is not there. The Bears have not utilized the better pure rusher in RB Roschon Johnson, they have not used the dual-threat ability of Khalil Herbert.

It’s been the looming pressure from ownership to play D’Andre Swift, who they are paying the most. The offensive line either does not have the skill set to run Waldron’s run-blocking schemes, or they are the most untalented offensive line in the league. Swift as a rusher is not working, neither is the play-calling.

    Conclusion – WIN!

The Chicago Bears need to win a few football games before anything else and right now the way to do that is not trying to install or develop a running game that isn’t there. The way to do that is by utilizing the skillset of a nice mobile QB1 with arm talent, a quality group of pass-catching playmakers in WR DJ Moore, TE Cole Kmet, WR Rome Odunze, and hopefully, WR Keenan Allen who looks to play this week.

Sure, draw up some screens and pass plays for RB D’Andre Swift – use his best skills. But, leave the running game to Roschon Johnson and Khalil Herbert, especially once the Bears have some clock to burn with a lead.
