10th Seated USU Wins 4-0 Over San Jose State

USU took on San Jose State on its home turf after winning over Grand Canyon 3-1 and tying against Washington State. The Aggies opened their Mountain West play, coming away with four goals and shutting out the Spartans. Like most Aggies games, they started playing hard and kept up the pressure. USU took the lead in only five minutes with a penalty kick inside the Spartan goalkeeper's box after a foul was called.

Freshman Forward/Midfielder Austin Miller was the Aggie who drew the foul and then took the shot. She shot the ball perfectly near the left post, scoring the game's first goal. There wasn’t much San Jose could do after that, and USU wouldn’t let up.

After The First, Here Were The Next Two

The Aggies dominated at the beginning of the game, and sophomore Forward Kate Christian was the next to shine. It was only the seventh minute of the game when she took a shot on the Spartan goal when she was 30 yards out. It was a high shot that went over several players and also the high, outstretched fingers of the keeper.

San Jose started to find some rhythm after being down two early in the first half. The ball was tossed around in the next half an hour without either scoring. Then, in the 43rd minute, the Aggies changed things up, extending their lead. It started when senior midfielder Rine Yonaha crossed the ball from the corner to junior Midfielder Kaitlyn Richins. She only had to tap it past the keeper, and that sent the Aggies up 3-0.

The Last Goal Of The Game Was Different

The last goal of the night involved several Aggies just before the 45 minute mark of the game. It took several Aggies to get this one, and the first was sophomore Defender Kayla Sato. She threw the ball right to the feet of sophomore Forward Solena Sellers, who was about 20 yards away. Sellers chipped in a high-arching shot in the top left corner of the net.

That ended the game, which the Aggies won 4-0. After defeating San Jose, the Aggies remain undefeated, bringing the season total to 10-0-1. This is also the seventh shutout for them this season as USU has scored 36 goals so far this year and only allowed seven.

Stats Of The Game

The Aggies have also excelled in assists. Kaylan Sato’s assist in the 77th minute of the game was the 35th assist of the season. This is the new record for USU. The record was 34 assists which was done in 2007 and again in 2021.

USU has also scored more than a single goal for the 10th time in its 11 games this year. It is a tie for its program record, which was repeated in 2002. The Aggies scored multiple times and attempted 22 shots on the Spartans while holding them to only ten attempts back. This brings the shot average to 9-4.

What This Game Means For The Players

USU attempted 15 of their 22 shots in the second half. Thirteen different Aggie players took shots on the Spartans, with the lead going to graduate Midfielder Alex Day, who had four efforts. This was also another game in which graduate Keeper Cora Bendle played all through the game. She also saved four close calls during this game.

Also, the penalty kick in Miller's game was the second goal from a penalty of the season. Counting the goals scored in this game improved several players' states. Miller’s goal was her fourth of the season and also her career. Christian's was also her fourth goal of the season and the sixth of her career. It was Richins’ second of the season and her third career score. Sellers had her second and fourth career goals.

USU will have the chance to keep up their game-playing style when they take on Fresno State in Fresno on Sunday. This is the second match for them in the Mountain West playing and a chance to break more records. Will playing away from home prove to be too much for USU, bringing their first loss? Fresno is currently 4-3-1, and the Bulldogs may be ready for the Aggies.
