Miguel Rojas Takes Home Dodgers' 2024 Roy Campanella Award

Miguel Rojas has undoubtedly made an incredible impact on the Los Angeles Dodgers this season. His grit and determination on the field have not been overlooked by the Dodgers organization. He has been an asset to their success in more ways than one.

Between his talent and leadership on the field and presence in the clubhouse, he has made a lasting impression since his debut with the Dodgers. The players and coaches of the Los Angeles Dodgers have awarded Rojas with the annual Roy Campanella Award. He was presented the award on Wednesday before their game against the San Diego Padres.

    Roy Campanella Award

The Roy Campanella Award was created by the Dodgers in 2006. It is a well-esteemed award that is given each year to the player who “best exemplifies the spirit and leadership of the late Hall of Fame Brooklyn Dodger catcher.” The award is voted on annually by both players and coaches.

There are only three current Dodgers who have been awarded this honor, those include, Chris Taylor, Freddie Freeman, and Clayton Kershaw. Other notable players who have earned this award over the years are former Dodgers, Jason Heyward, Chase Utley, Justin Turner, Matt Kemp, and A.J. Ellis. This year, the decision was easy for the Dodgers as Rojas has stepped up in many ways this season. He is batting a consistent .283 with an OBP of .337 and slugging .410. He currently has the highest WAR of his career.

One notable aspect of Rojas’ season was his aptness for playing shortstop this year. Though well-versed in the middle infield, he did not begin the year at short. Mookie Betts had taken on that role early on. When the superstar had to make an unexpected trip to the injured list early on as a result of a broken hand, Rojas stepped up and seized his opportunity. Since then, he has stayed put on the left side of the field.

    Injury Plagues The Team Again

Just as things begin to look up for Los Angeles, another important piece to their lineup has succumbed to injury. The recent Roy Campanella Award Winner has fallen victim to a postseason-threatening incident. Dealing with left adductor pain all season, Rojas left the game early on Wednesday versus the Padres as Tommy Edman took his place at shortstop.

Scans revealed that he tore his adductor muscle and will need reconstructive surgery in the offseason. The injury is not season-ending, however. He has received a cortisone shot and is expected to play through it during the postseason.

    Dodgers and Rojas Moving Forward

The Los Angeles Dodgers begin game one of their series versus the Colorado Rockies tonight, Sept. 27. The three-game series is set to close on Sunday as it is the final regular season game of the year. Rojas is expected to return to action on Sunday to play once more before the National League Division Series begins on Saturday, Oct. 5.
