Palmer Makes History As Chelsea Defeat Brighton 4-2

Chelsea’s Cole Palmer saw himself in the Premier League history book on Saturday as his team defeated Brighton 4-2. Chelsea beat Brighton at Stamford Bridge thanks to the four goals scored by the 22-year-old. Palmer made history as he scored all of Chelsea’s four goals in the first half.

As It Happened

Chelsea found themselves on the back foot early on when Robert Sanchez’s inability to catch an aerial ball allowed Georgino Rutter to net his first goal for Brighton just seven minutes into the match. Levi Colwill and Moises Caicedo were also at fault for failing to clear the ball inside their own area. Chelsea reacted excellently to this early goal as they battered the Brighton defense, which was without Joel Veltman and Jan Paul van Hecke. Palmer found the back of the net thanks to a well-timed pull-back from Nicolas Jackson for his first goal of the match. He then maintained his flawless penalty record after Jadon Sancho was brought down in the box for his second.

Palmer then scored his third with a stunning free kick from 25 yards that appeared to give Chelsea comfort. His hat-trick was just in 11 minutes. However, a costly mistake from Sanchez opened the door for Brighton to claw their way back into contention. Carlos Baleba seized the opportunity presented by the Chelsea goalkeeper’s incorrect pass just three minutes after Palmer’s third goal to make it 3-2. Palmer quickly calmed the tension at Stamford Bridge, etching his name in the record books with a historic fourth goal. This time he was assisted by Jadon Sancho.

Palmer Furious Not To Have Scored 5

When asked after the game, Enzo Maresca said:

“I just said to Cole, he scored four, he could score two, three more. It’s good that he continues to be hungry and ambitious.”

Palmer received the news of the record at halftime, but in the end, he narrowly missed out on achieving it. In the long, rich history of the Premier League, only five players have achieved the remarkable feat of scoring five goals in a single match. They are Sergio Aguero, Dimitar Berbatov, Alan Shearer, Andy Cole, and Jermain Defoe.

“When I missed the chance in the second half I was fuming,” Palmer said. “I should have scored that so I was pretty angry.

“I wasn’t thinking about [the record], I just wanted to win.”

Palmer has made history by becoming the first player to score four goals in the first half of a Premier League match. With the victory over Brighton, Enzo Maresca’s team currently has 13 points from six matches.
