Indiana Hoosiers Football Team 5-0 For First Time Since 1967

The Indiana Hoosiers football team is 5-0 for the first time in 50 years. This week the #23 Hoosiers made the first appearance in the AP College Football poll since 2021. The Indiana Hoosiers football team needs only one more win to become bowl-eligible, but their new head football coach has his sights set much higher than making a mediocre bowl game.

Meet The Indiana Hoosiers Football Coach

At his first press conference, new Indiana Hoosiers Football Coach, Curt Cignetti bluntly boasted: “I win. Google me.” Five games into his tenure, the football Hoosiers are turning heads with a 5-0 start. The last team the Indiana Hoosiers football team started a season 5-0 was 1967 - 57 years ago. None of the current players were born. Heck, half their parents probably don’t remember 1967. That was the last year Indiana played in the Rose Bowl.

Coach Called Big Game At Rose Bowl 'A Business Trip'

Just a few weeks ago Indiana welcomed UCLA into the Big Ten with a 42-13 beat down at the Rose Bowl (the famous stadium - not “the grandaddy of ‘em all” bowl game). Cignetti coached in a Rose Bowl as a receivers coach for Alabama. The Crimson Tide defeated Texas in 2009 to win the national championships. Perhaps Cignetti’s ties to the legendary Nick Saban explain his no-nonsense approach.

When asked about the significance of opening the Big Ten season at the fabled Rose Bowl stadium, Cignetti described it as “a business trip.” “Whether we’re playing in the Rose Bowl or in a parking lot, it’s all the same.”

Indiana Hoosiers Football Team Flying Under the Radar

Despite averaging more than 50 points per game with a huge margin of victory averaging better than 40 points per game, the “experts” discounted Indiana due to its weak competition. After its two-touchdown win over a talented Maryland team, the Hoosiers finally cracked the AP 25 college football rankings this week.

Indiana’s Defense Stiffens After Rare Turnovers

Indiana entered Saturday’s contest in Bloomington as one of only three FBS teams without a turnover. That streak ended quickly with a first-quarter interception. And then another. The Hoosiers offense turned the ball over four times on the day. Yet Maryland failed to score a single point off the four giveaways. The stiff Indiana defense didn’t even allow the Maryland offense one first down after a turnover.

Six Different Hoosiers Scored Touchdowns Saturday

Indiana Hoosiers football scored six touchdowns during Saturday’s contest. Six different players scored for the Hoosiers. Quarterback Kurtis Rourke threw for a season-high 359 yards including touchdown passes to Elijah Sarratt, Omar Cooper Jr., and Donaven McCulley. Ty Son Lawton led the Hoosiers ground attack with 93 yards and a touchdown. Justice Ellison and Myles Price rounded out the scoring with rushing touchdowns.

Next Saturday, the Indiana football Hoosiers put their undefeated record on the line with a road game against the 2-2 Northwestern Wildcats. According to ESPN Analytics, the Hoosiers have an 85% chance to reach 6-0. Indiana fans hope it won’t be another 57 years until the football Hoosiers start another season 5-0
