The sports world is mourning one of the best players in history as multiple outlets are reporting that Pete Rose has passed away at the age of 83. The MLB legend had an incredible career that included leading Major League Baseball in hits (4,256), at-bats (14,053), plate appearances (15,890), and games played (3,562) during his 24 years as a player. The baseball world mourns the loss of one of the most iconic and controversial players in MLB history. Let's take a look at the history of Pete Rose.

Pete Rose, A Controversial Figure in Baseball

Pete Rose's agent, Ryan Fiterman of Fiterman Sports, reported to TMZ Sports that the legendary baseball player passed away at the age of 83. He was one of the greatest players to ever step foot on a diamond, making 17 All-Star Games, three World Series victories, and winning the 1973 National League Most Valuable Player Award. He played for the Cincinnati Reds, Philadelphia Phillies, and Montreal Expos.

"Charlie Hustle" returned to the Cincinnati Reds to finish his career as a player-manager and that is where the controversy began. Pete Rose was banned from baseball by then-MLB commissioner Bart Giamatti in 1989 after it was determined that Rose bet on baseball. Rose would deny the accusation for years before coming clean and admitting so in the mid-2000s. Despite coming clean and stating that he never bet on games that he played in, Pete Rose never had his lifetime ban lifted. However, the Cincinnati Reds inducted him into the Reds Hall of Fame.

It will be interesting to see if Pete Rose is able to get the ban lifted and posthumously be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
