Former Manchester United and Aston Villa star Ashley Young has heavily criticized Manchester United’s wingers, accusing them of lacking confidence following their 3-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford. The defeat to Ange Postecoglou’s side was Manchester United’s third defeat of the season in the English Premier League, and they have only scored one goal at Old Trafford so far, a 1-0 win over Fulham in the opener.

Rashford, Garnacho Failed To Make An Impact

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Super Sunday, Ashley Young offered a blunt assessment of two Manchester United’s wide players who started the match – Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho, questioning their decision-making and intent during the match.

“Where you’ve got the two wingers going one V one and instead of going to attack the space in behind, they would rather turn back and play the safe pass, that’s when you know you’ve got no winger that’s got no confidence,” Young said in his analysis.

He expressed disappointment that United’s wingers repeatedly opted for safe, backward passes instead of trying to exploit attacking opportunities.

“You know as a winger when you see a one V one. That’s when your eyes light up. That’s your time to shine, and when players are not doing that and turning it down and wanting to go backwards, it’s not the way of doing it,”

Young added, stressing that wingers must be more aggressive and direct in such situations.

Tottenham’s 3-0 victory came courtesy of goals from Brennan Johnson, Dejan Kulusevski, and Dominic Solanke, sealing a dominant performance for Ange Postecoglou’s side. The defeat also marked a significant low point for United, who have now lost consecutive Premier League matches at Old Trafford without scoring for the first time since November 2021. This slump has intensified calls from fans for the sacking of manager Erik ten Hag.

Ashley Young, currently playing for Everton, registered an assist in their 2-1 win over Crystal Palace during the weekend, marking Everton’s first victory of the season.
