New York Mets Set Sights On NLDS After Thrilling Victory

The New York Mets had a game for the ages last night in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. First Baseman Pete Alonso hit a three-home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to help secure a Game 3 victory and punch their ticket to the NLDS. With New York officially moving on, they will turn their attention to a ballclub they are very familiar with. The Philadelphia Phillies.

New York went 6-7 against the Phillies this season but took three of four games when they last faced off in Flushing Meadows in September. The NLDS begins tomorrow with the winner of this best-of-five series moving on to the NLCS. Will either the New York Mets or Philadelphia Phillies win this series and keep their postseason alive?

New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies: Season Summary

New York had a strong offense during the regular season. They finished 12th in batting average, sixth in home runs, and seventh in runs scored. The pitching staff of the New York Mets was the weaker part of their ballclub this season. They were 15th in ERA, fifth in strikeouts, and second, and second in opposing batting average. New York's bullpen was a weak point of their team as they were 19th in bullpen ERA(4.94). The team's bullpen almost cost them in their series against the Milwaukee Brewers. They coughed up a late lead in Game 2 and surrendered two earned runs in last night's contest. Fortunately, Alonso made history in the game.

Philadelphia was one of the league's best teams throughout the regular season. A struggle in the season's final few weeks saw the Los Angeles Dodgers surpass them for the top seed in the National League. The Phillies had a great offense this year. They were fifth in batting average, seventh in home runs, and fifth in runs scored. They also had a strong pitching staff as they were 11th in ERA, eighth in batting average, and 10th in WHIP.

    Looking Ahead To Game 1

Philadelphia will send Zack Wheeler to the mound in Game 1. In a stroke of poetic justice, Wheeler will get to face his former team as he was a member of the New York Mets from 2013-2019. Wheeler had a dominant 2024 regular season campaign as he was third in wins, third in ERA, third in strikeouts, and third in WHIP.

He experienced great success against the New York Mets this season. Wheeler faced New York in his penultimate start of the regular season and was dominant. He surrendered two earned runs over seven innings while punching out eight. He will look to reproduce this start on Saturday and put his former ballclub in a 0-1 hole. At the time of publication, New York has yet to announce their starting pitcher for tomorrow's game. The New York Mets are riding high and will look to start the NLDS with a victory.
