New York Mets Win 6-1 Thanks To Late-Game Surge

The New York Mets won 6-1 tonight on the road against the Philadelphia Phillies to take Game 1 of the NLDS. Philadelphia got off to a quick start today as Designated Hitter Kyle Schwarber hit a home run to lead off the bottom of the first inning. This game remained 1-0 until the New York Mets bats came alive in the top of the eighth inning. They scored five runs in the top of the eighth to power them to victory. Third Baseman Mark Vientos tied the game up with an RBI single. Left Fielder Brandon Nimmo added an RBI single while First Baseman added a SAC fly to give NY a 3-1 advantage.

J.D. Martinez added an RBI single and Right Fielder Starling Marte added a SAC Fly to cap off the scoring in the top of the eighth inning. Nimmo added another RBI single to score their sixth run of the evening. Philadelphia scored one run in the bottom of the ninth, but a poor eighth inning cost them this evening. Will the New York Mets be able to carry this momentum into Game 2 tomorrow afternoon?

New York Mets Powered By Pitching Staff

It was not just New York's offense that led the way this evening. Their pitching staff was also exemplary. Starting Pitcher Kodai Senga, making only his second start of the season, surrendered one earned run over two innings of work. The rest of the New York Mets bullpen surrendered one earned run over seven innings. Their bullpen surrendered only one hit. An RBI single to Kody Clemens in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Philadelphia's pitching staff also pitched well, but they were undone in the late innings. Starting Pitcher Zack Wheeler was spectacular, but was let down by his bullpen. He tossed seven scoreless scoreless innings while punching out nine against his former ballclub. Jeff Hoffman and Matt Strahm had miserable outings surrendering five earned runs while only recording one out. They cost their team the game.

Looking Ahead To Game 2

The New York Mets will send Luis Severino to the mound tomorrow afternoon and he will be opposed by Christopher Sanchez. Severino had an average start in Game 1 of the NL Wild Card Series against the Milwaukee Brewers. He surrendered four runs(three earned) over six innings. Severino will look to improve upon that start on Sunday afternoon.

Sanchez had a strong regular season as he was 18th in the league in ERA. He faced NY three times this season and fared well. He tossed 17.2 innings and surrendered six earned runs. If he can recreate these performances in Game 2, the Philadelphia Phillies will have a great chance to tie this series up heading back to Flushing Meadows. With the New York Mets already stealing home-field advantage this evening, going up 2-0 on the road would have them in the driver's seat in the NLDS.
