Egbuka Shines as OSU Wins its Fifth Game of 2024

Emeka Egbuka is probably the second-best wide receiver in the nation. He had a breakout game against Iowa on 5 October 2024. He had three touchdowns in Ohio State's 35-7 win. This article will start by reviewing Egbuka’s big day and then review some important notes from the game. And we'll end with a scoring summary of the Buckeye's big win.

    Egbuka's Big Day

Egbuka had an enormous game for the Buckeyes. He led all wide receivers with nine catches. Egbuka had 71 receiving yards and scored three touchdowns. He took his rightful place among the best wide receivers in the country. Ohio State tends to throw him short passes like they did in this game, and then Egbuka breaks a long run off the catch.

    Game Notes

Some other notable things that happened in the game also deserve attention.

    1. Jeremiah Smith, whose cousin is Geno Smith, the quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks, caught another one-handed touchdown pass. He is the first freshman in Ohio State history to have touchdown catches in his first five games.
    2. Kaleb Johnson, the feature running back for Iowa, was the second-leading running back in the nation coming into the game. The Buckeyes defense held him to just 86 yards on the ground. Johnson, from Ohio, is a handful.
    3. Caleb Downs, the Buckeyes safety who transferred from the University of Alabama, flew around the defensive secondary.
    4. Ohio State sacked Iowa quarterback Cade McNamara 3 times.
    5. Ohio State held Iowa to 276 yards. Ohio State had 412 yards of offense.
    6. More than 101,000 people attended the game at Ohio Stadium. The ‘Horseshoe’ opened in 1922.

    Scoring Summary

Ohio State had only a 7-0 lead at halftime. The game was close, and Iowa played well. Two turnovers hurt the Buckeyes. Egbuka's first touchdown catch gave Ohio State the lead. Ohio State scored four touchdowns in the second half before Iowa scored in garbage time when they were down 35-0.

Freshman Jeremiah Smith made his one-handed touchdown catch to give Ohio State a 14-0 lead. Will Howard ran for an eight-yard touchdown to give the Buckeyes a 21-0 lead. Egbuka then caught two more touchdown passes to give Ohio State a 35-0 lead. That lead held until 8:07 left in the fourth quarter when Kalen Johnson rushed for a meaningless touchdown. Unfortunately, the scoring was tedious in this game.

    Conclusion

Emeka Egbuka had a big day receiving for the Buckeyes. That is a good thing. He solidly established himself as one of the top wide receivers in the nation. Ohio State will need him to perform well in their next game at sixth-ranked University of Oregon. The Buckeyes are currently ranked third, but the University of Alabama, the team that was ranked first, was upset this past Saturday. So, the Buckeyes should move up one spot, and Oregon may move up one spot. Next week, Ohio State will have a gigantic road test.
