On Tuesday, the Dallas Mavericks released AJ Lawson after two years in Dallas, Texas. Lawson, 24, was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, but attended the University of South Carolina from 2018 and 2021 and pursued a college basketball career. He went undrafted at the 2021 NBA Draft, despite signing an agent.

Lawson, a shooting guard, split his time with the Mavericks and their NBA G League affiliate, the Texas Legends, on a two-way contract signed on December 26, 2022, and later converted to a standard contract on March 4, 2024. Here’s what you need to know about the Mavericks’ release of Lawson.

The Dallas Mavericks released AJ Lawson on Tuesday. Lawson initially joined the Mavericks in the 2022 NBA Summer League, where he averaged 15.6 points and 6.0 rebounds per game while shooting 51.9% from the field. But he subsequently signed a two-way contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves, who waived him just three months later. The Timberwolves later signed him to another two-way contract, but things didn’t work out.

Lawson was a part of the Mavericks’ 2024 NBA Finals roster against the Boston Celtics. Lawson’s other 2024 NBA Playoffs appearances included 10 postseason games with the Dallas Mavericks. He also appeared in seven NBA G League games with the Texas Legends last season.

AJ Lawson’s Year 2 in Dallas

Before his sudden yet perhaps inevitable release, AJ Lawson was coming off his second season with the Dallas Mavericks. Lawson averaged 3.4 points, 1.2 rebounds, and 0.4 assists per game while shooting 46.1% from the field and 30.7% from the three-point range in Year 2 with the Mavericks between October 2023 and June 2024.

Lawson’s roster spot has reportedly been in jeopardy since the Summer of 2024. His potential could’ve helped him become a reliable player and shine on the basketball court, but things didn’t work out in Dallas, Texas.

Overall Resume of AJ Lawson

AJ Lawson’s overall resume is impressive, to put it mildly. Lawson’s resume can be described as a journeyman’s resume, but Lawson could sign with a new NBA team sooner than later. His talents include athleticism, ballhandling, passing, and scoring, just to name a few.

Lawson was on a non-guaranteed contract as a part of the Dallas Mavericks, but Lawson’s release was a bit more notable than the Mavericks’ previous releases. He was on a standard, multi-year contract with the team instead of an Exhibit 10 contract in the team’s training camp.

Lawson may or may not sign with a different NBA team in the coming days. But it’s important to note the Mavericks still have one two-way roster spot available, as of Tuesday, October 8. So if the team wants to bring him back, they could re-sign him to a second two-way contract as long as he clears waivers since his multi-year contract wasn’t eligible to be directly converted into a two-way contract.
