Carter Verhaeghe Signs 8-Year Contract Worth $56 Million

The Florida Panthers opened the season last night against the Boston Bruins at Amerant Bank Arena. The Panthers raised their Stanley Cup banner high into the rafters where it will stay forever. The Panthers were victorious against the Bruins winning 6-4. Before the game, the Florida Panthers signed Forward Carter Verhaeghe to an 8-year, 56-million-dollar contract. This will carry a $7 million annual cap hit. He had four shorts with no points last night. How will this deal work out for both sides?

Carter Verhaeghe Signs 8-Year Contract With Florida Panthers

Carter Verhaeghe has played a big factor in the Florida Panthers playoff success. He holds the franchise playoff records for goals (26), even-strength points (21), overtime goals (5) and game-winning goals (10). The forward out of Hamilton, Canada scored series-clinching goals in overtime against the Washington Capitals in 2022 and the Boston Bruins in 2023. Panthers General Manager Bill Zito said: “His willpower and perseverance have allowed him to repeatedly succeed as a critical performer on the biggest stages. He is an integral part of our team now and into the future, and we are thrilled to see him remain a part of our core group.”

Carter Verhaeghe was a two-time Stanley Cup Champion before coming to the Florida Panthers. Carter Verhaeghe won the Stanley Cup with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2020. Before the game, Verhaeghe was halfway dressed when he heard from his agent and GM Bill Zito that the deal was done. Verhaeghe said: “I was halfway dressed and then he went in and told me it was done. So, I was happy to get it done before the game, that way I could focus on the game and not have that go through my head the whole time.”

Looking Ahead To the 2024 Season

Carter Verhaeghe did not tell his teammates about his new contract but some of them found out and during the banner ceremony last night. Captain Alexsander Barkov asked Verhaeghe subtly about the new contract and Verhaeghe responded, "Yeah, I’m going to be your teammate for a while," Verhaeghe recalls. It was a night that capped off a magical summer. "To be a Florida Panther for this long already is a huge honor for me. To even extend it longer, I'm just so grateful to the organization," Verhaeghe said.

Now that Carter Verhaeghe is going to be a Florida Panther for a while, the Panthers will look to make another run at the playoffs this season and see what the future holds for them. The Panthers are now heading on an early four-game road trip where they will start in Ottawa on Thursday night, then Buffalo on Saturday, and back-to-back games in Boston and Columbus to wrap up the road trip. They will return home for their second home game of the year against the Vancouver Canucks on October 17. Verhaeghe will look to validate his contract this season and beyond.
