Ohio State Cross Country in 2024 is Sneaky Good

This year, some fast Ohio State Buckeyes are on the Men's and Women's cross country teams. The cross country teams are (a likely predecessor to the winter and spring track teams, for the distance runners, at least). Cross country is another undercovered sport, so here we discuss their schedule and roster.

One thing important to know at the outset is that scoring in meets is based on placement in races. One sums up the places of all the runners on the team in the race. The top five runner's places count in college cross country, and the team with the lowest score wins.

Men's Cross Country Schedule at Ohio State in 2024

The Ohio State men had their first cross country meet on August 30, 2024, at the Tommy Evans Invitational, and they came in first place. Buckeyes came in second, third, fourth, sixth, and eighth in that cross country meet for a winning team score of 22.

The Buckeyes then ran in the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis and came in fifth place out of seventeen teams. The third meet for the Ohio State men in cross country was at the Loyola Lakefront Invitational in Chicago on Friday, October 4. They did not fare well, coming in ninth out of fifteen competing teams.

The rest of the schedule for the men's cross country team is yet to unfold. They run in the Wisconsin pre-national on October 19 and then have the Big Ten Conference Championships on November 1. They have the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championships on November 15 and the NCAA Championships (at Madison, Wisconsin) on November 23.

Men's Cross Country Roster at Ohio State in 2024

There are 14 runners on the Ohio State men's cross country roster in 2024. They are Colby Adams, a junior; Jack Agnew, a freshman; and Kevin Agnew (Jack's older brother), a senior. Zach Beneteau, a senior; Sean Carney, a senior; Colin Cernansky, a freshman.

In addition, John Cuozzo, a fifth-year senior; Weston Day a freshman; Keegan Freyhof a junior; Zubin Jha a junior; Connor Long, a freshman; Kaleb Martin, a senior; Will McGraw a sophomore; Liam Shaughnessy a sophomore; and Keegan Souhan a sophomore.

This seems to be a balanced team age-wise and should perform well in the future. Just to give you an idea of their performance, at the Tommy Evan's Invitational, a 6k race which they won, the Buckeyes' top five runners were J. Agnew, K. Agnew, Jha, Day, and Long, with an average time of 18:20 and an average mile time of 4:55.

Women's Cross Country Schedule at Ohio State in 2024

The women's cross country team at Ohio State has the same schedule as the men's, though they run on a different course and, of course, have different placements. At the Tommy Evans Invitational, they came in second place. That was a good race for Ohio State, with a first-place finish for the men and a second-place finish for the women. There were ten teams in the women's race.

The Lady Buckeyes then ran in the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis and came in seventh place out of seventeen teams, the same number as the Men's. The Lady Buckeyes then ran cross country at the Loyola Lakefront Invitational in Chicago and came in tenth place out of sixteen teams that competed.

The Lady Buckeyes have the same upcoming schedule as the men. They run in the Wisconsin pre-national on October 19, then they have the Big Ten Conference Championships on November 1, the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championships on November 15, and finally the NCAA Championships (at Madison, Wisconsin) on November 23.

Women's Cross Country Roster at Ohio State in 2024

The Women's cross country team is also quite balanced age-wise. The women's team is larger than the Men's team. There are twenty-one runners on the Women's cross-country team. They are Katie Castelli, a junior; Bri Chaves-Bernal a freshman; Jessica Derickson, a freshman; Audrey DeSantis, another freshman; Lillian Eckels a sophomore.

Also, Addie Engel, a fifth-year senior; Amelia Figler, another fifth-year senior; Teodora Iovi, a sophomore; Hailey Kahl, a freshman; Ana Karmol, a junior; Andrea Kuhn, a graduate student; Zoee Lehman, a sophomore; Aniya Mosley, a junior; Carina Napoleon, a senior.

And Olivia Oiler, a sophomore; Sydney Paul, a junior; Mia Robillard, a sophomore; Daniella Santos, a senior; Lindsay Stull, another senior; Dillon Sweetman, a sophomore; Akemi Von Scherr, a fifth-year senior.

Women's cross country has a relatively large and young roster. Results should improve in the years to come. Their second-place performance at the Tommy Evan's Invitational 5k was led by Castelli, Von Scherr, Paul, DeSantis, and Iovi, with an average time of 18:26 and an average mile time of 5:56.

    Conclusion

Cross country does not get much press. Hopefully, this article will give it some. These college students work too hard for it to be otherwise. Expect strong performances for the Big Ten and NCAA championships.
