On Tuesday, Joy Anna Duggar recounted her scary experience with baby Gunner on her Instagram story. She starts by explaining that her youngest son, 1-year-old Gunner, had a cold. A run of the mill cough and runny nose. The couple put Gunner and their two other children to bed. In the middle of the night, the parents noticed that their son was wheezing and struggling to breathe. The couple tried some home remedies, but nothing worked.
Finally, the couple decided to take their son to the hospital. The hospital tried everything before admitting him. Steroids, breathing treatments, clearing his sinuses—nothing worked. He still had very labored breathing. Baby Gunner ended up having to stay at the hospital on oxygen for just over three days. This is the second time the young boy has been in the hospital for a common cold this year. Doctors suspect that Gunner may have asthma, but it is too early to tell.
It’s wonderful that Gunner’s parents are on top of their son’s health. Joy Anna Duggar is known as one of the most candid Duggars when it comes to discussing mental health and health conditions she has experienced. For example, instead of blaming herself for her mental health like her sister Jinger, Joy Anna publicly discussed having postpartum depression with baby Gunner that was worse than her prior ‘baby blues.’ She also shared that she is consulting with her doctor and her therapist. Her candidness with fans is remarkable.
Joy Anna Duggar’s Parenting Woes
Joy Anna Duggar is one of her many siblings who’s faced criticism for their child-rearing ways. Let’s just say not everything was up to code when it came to her own childhood—it’s hard to keep a close eye on all 19 kids. Particularly with the buddy system (kids raising kids) that began when Josh Duggar was roughly eight. It’s truly a miracle that everyone has all their fingers, toes, and limbs in the Duggar family.

In 2023, there was the crossbow incident when the weapon was left out on the kitchen counter unattended with five-year-old Gideon and three-year-old Evelyn. More recently, fans were upset when Joy Anna rode an ATV with baby Gunner. It was mostly the helmetless status of both people that had fans concerned.
Of course, neither of those incidents is anywhere near as scary as what her older sisters pulled off. Jana Duggar was charged with child endangerment in 2022 after her niece was wandering the streets (it was further than a little slip out the door, like Ms. Duggar tried to explain).
