New York Mets Dominated In Game 1 Of NLCS

The New York Mets dropped Game One of the NLCS tonight 9-0 to the Los Angeles Dodgers. New York Mets Starting Pitcher Kodai Senga had a rough day on the mound tonight on the road against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He walked three of the first four batters he faced and couldn't escape the jam. A two-run double by Third Baseman Max Muncy gave LA an early 2-0 lead. An RBI single by Designated Hitter Shohei Ohtani in the bottom of the second made it 3-0. This ended Senga's night as he surrendered three earned runs over 1.1 innings.

Starting Pitcher David Peterson was used as a relief pitcher and tossed a scoreless bottom of the third, but had a miserable bottom of the fourth. He was tagged for three runs in the half inning. Shortstop Tommy Edman and Ohtani added RBI singles and First Baseman Freddie Freeman tacked on an RBI double. Right Fielder Mookie Betts added a three-run double in the bottom of the eighth inning to continue the offensive onslaught. Will the New York Mets be able to rebound in Game 2?

New York Mets Offense Was Offensive

The offense of the New York Mets suffered the same fate the San Diego Padres did late in the ALDS. Los Angeles is in the midst of a 33 scoreless inning streak which set a National League postseason record. They have not surrendered an earned run since the second inning of Game 3 of the NLDS. Los Angeles Dodgers Starting Pitcher Jack Flaherty began his start with four no-hit innings. New York Mets Designated Hitter Jesse Winker got the first hit for the club to begin the top of the fifth. Flaherty would go on to toss seven scoreless innings while punching six and surrendering two hits.

LA's bullpen would toss two scoreless innings to preserve the team's third consecutive shutout. New York would have nearly as many hits tonight(3) as they had errors(2). This is a game the Mets would like to forget. They went 0-of-3 with RISP in tonight's game. Timely hitting was a hallmark of NY's playoff run heading into the NLCS. A hot offense ran into a pitching staff on a historic run and was bested.

    Looking Ahead To Game 2

The New York Mets will look to rebound tomorrow afternoon on a Columbus Day matinee. New York will send Sean Manaea to the mound while Los Angeles is slated to have a bullpen game on Monday. Manaea has been great during the 2024 MLB Playoffs. He has surrendered three earned runs over 12 innings of work in the postseason this year. He turned in stellar performances against the Milwaukee Brewers and Philadelphia Phillies. Manaea faced LA in April and fared well. He surrendered two earned runs over five innings of work. New York will need another great start from the veteran lefty to try and get the NLCS back on track.

Los Angeles is no stranger to a bullpen game. They used that strategy in Game 4 of the NLDS against the San Diego Padres and it worked out perfectly. They won 8-0 as eight pitchers combined for the shutout. The Dodgers hope they can reproduce some of that success in Game 2 of the NLCS. New York will need to rebound or they will head home in a 0-2 hole.
