Cam Akers Traded from Texans to Vikings

Cam Akers, a Minnesota Viking before he wore the navy and red for the Texans, is returning to his former team. This comes after Akers filled in for several injured running backs for Houston over the past four weeks. The irony is that he is rejoining his former team yet again to fill in for another injured running back.

Cam Akers Traded for Sixth-Round Pick

This trade seems to make sense on both sides: the Texans have healthy running backs, Minnesota needs another rusher, while Aaron Jones is nursing a hip injury. Here is what each team gained in the trade:

Vikings get: Cam Akers, 2026 seventh-round pick

    Texans get: 2026 sixth-round pick

From the Texans' perspective, Akers had already done his best work this season. He came through while both Dameon Pierce and Joe Mixon were injured. Both running backs had good games in their last showing against New England, though, so it looks like they will use Pierce as the second option to Mixon.

Akers could have stayed on the team as the third-string running back, but the Texans want Dare Ogunbowale to fill that role. Both players got two carries in the New England game, but only Ogunbowale got positive yardage. Throughout the season, Ogunbowale has seen plenty of time on the field, which shows the coaching staff's faith in him.

Is This Trade Good for Minnesota?

Considering Minnesota looks like an early Superbowl contender, adding depth to their running back room certainly helps. First of all, Aaron Jones is week-to-week at the moment. He could play in Week 7 but also could miss several weeks. '

Since Jones was injured, the next man up for the Vikings was Ty Chandler, whose numbers were all over the place. He had a great game against the 49ers in Week 2, rushing for over 90 yards. The issue is that his most recent games haven't been as impressive. In his one game as the starter, Chandler could only rush for 30 yards on 14 carries and no touchdowns.

It wasn't like Akers was lighting up the field, but he gave the team an extra dimension for their rushing attack. Akers is arguably a better receiver than Chandler, who has only caught six passes this season. On the other hand, Akers did catch a touchdown pass (oddly against the Vikings) and has a better history of catching passes.

    Who Won the Trade?

From a glance, it looks like Minnesota won the trade since they got a player instead of just a pick. It's hard to say that Houston lost the trade when they got rid of a player who wouldn't see much playing time going forward.

Getting Akers was a very smart move for Minnesota, though, as the Vikings can't afford to lose production running the football. Their next game is against the division rival Detroit Lions, and the following games are against the Rams and the Colts. Minnesota would appreciate what Cam Akers can do in that period while waiting for Jones to return.
