Replacing Mario and Sonic: The Future of Olympic Games

The fan-favorite Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games did not feature an installment for 2024. While many question whether there will be a new game in the series or a new game entirely, an Olympic series for Nintendo (which has offices in Washington) is a proven success, and if they don't take advantage, another developer will. A game to replace Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games would have to focus on gameplay above anything else.

The Next Mario And Sonic At The Olympic Games

Of course, Nintendo would ideally be the one to make a game to replace Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games. The safest replacement would be to create a new installment for 2028 or even a winter edition for 2026. A Super Mario Strikers-style game mode would undoubtedly be a success in an Olympic-style game. Creating a 2028 edition of Mario and Sonic would be a safe bet to please an audience.

A more realistic Olympic video game series that has been around for over a decade and made by SEGA is the official Olympic video game. SEGA has a lot of potential to take a monopoly on Olympic video games. In the 2020 game, 80 nations and 18 events are playable making it the most in-depth Olympic video game ever. If given more rights for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, SEGA should take advantage of this opportunity.

    Konami

Konami has an open door to make a great Olympic game. FIFA has recently announced Konami as its official Esports partner, this gives the opportunity for a great Olympic Football mode. In the early 2000s, Konami partnered with ESPN for the video game ESPN International Winter Sports 2002. The first officially licensed Olympic video game Hyper Sports was released by Konami in 1984, with a clear history in Olympic games Konami would be a viable option.

    Conclusion

It is uncertain whether Nintendo intends to release any more Olympic-style games, but there are still plenty of options. The truth is nothing may ever be able to replace Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games, and the fun gameplay will probably not be matched. It's likely that SEGA will continue to make an official Olympic game in 2028, and will be the most realistic game you could find.

There are plenty of smaller developers and publishers that can take advantage of this gap in Olympic video games. What made Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games so unique was the nonchalant and exciting gameplay among friends. The official Olympic game will obviously be more realistic, but for an Olympic game to have continued success it needs a great co-op. Fans should stay positive as Nintendo is known to listen, and the large audience of the US will be looking forward to 2028. The Olympics will never have a consistent audience so a game is always a risk, but there is hope for the future of this genre.
