What Would Make Tyrese Maxey Next Season’s MVP

Since the Sixers Media Day, Tyrese Maxey has been speaking about being 1% better every game. Also, the 23-year-old showcased what he plans to be 1% better in next season against the Brooklyn Nets. If Maxey perfects his skill, he should be an MVP-caliber player this season. What would make the Sixers guard be in the MVP talks in the 2024-25 season?

    Tyrese Maxey’s Improvement

Tyrese Maxey made his NBA debut in the 2020-21 season. In his rookie year, he didn’t make so much impact as he didn’t play in many games. Thus, the All-Star guard’s second year showcased his capabilities on the court. In his second year, Maxey finished sixth in the Most Improved Player Award race. He finished averaging 17.5 points, shooting 48.5% on field goals and 42.7% from deep in 75 games. The Sixers guard moved into his third year improving on his shooting skills.

In the third year, Maxey improved his three-point shooting. He finished the season averaging 20.3 points, shooting 48.1% from the field and 43.4% from downtown in 60 games. In his fourth year, Maxey started developing his playmaking and defensive skills. In 70 games, the Sixers guard averaged 6.2 assists and a steal per game.

Finally, the 6 -foot-2 guard made his first All-Star Game and won the Most Improved Player Award. In the 2023-24 season, Tyrese Maxey displayed his leadership skill on the court especially in the absence of Joel Embiid. Now, moving into this season, Maxey revealed his “1% better” goal against the Brooklyn Nets to give the Sixers their victory.

Season 5: Maxey Becomes MVP Contender

Against the Brooklyn Nets, Maxey played for 17 minutes and focused on setting up his teammates for success. In the game, the Sixers guard played facilitator by throwing alley-oops to KJ Martin and Andre Drummond. Tyrese Maxey tried to read the floor to understand the movement of his teammates and how he could create for them.

Playmaking is one of the skills the Sixers team needs to lean on this season. The Philly team became a bigger threat after signing Paul George to the team to make up the team's "Big Three." For the team to succeed, playmaking is crucial because other NBA teams would send double teams to plummet the team’s offensive effort.

If Tyrese Maxey develops his playmaking skills as a point guard, he will be in the MVP conversation. The 23-year-old continues to develop his ability to read the game and set up his teammates. Thus, we should expect more dunks and alley-oops from the Sixers and more assists per game from Tyrese Maxey.

    Final Thoughts

The Philadelphia 76ers will play against the Orlando Magic for their final preseason game tonight. If Maxey starts, it will help him improve his playmaking skills. The team has been gradually building chemistry on the court moving into the 2024-25 season. Let’s hope for better health among the team members as the franchise plans to progress further in the playoffs.
