Dallas Mavericks Waive Three Prospects After 2024 NBA Preseason

The Dallas Mavericks recently waived three prospects after closing out the 2024 NBA preseason on a high note. In case you missed it, Dallas blew out a short-handed Milwaukee Bucks team, 109-84, in the preseason finale at the American Airlines Center on Thursday night. Both the Mavericks and Bucks finished with 1-3 records.

The Mavericks have been preparing for the 2024-25 NBA regular season by waiving players on training camp and non-guaranteed deals. The Mavericks' tough decisions ultimately finalized their regular season roster. Here's a list of the three prospects who were waived recently.

    Dallas Mavericks' Latest Announcements

The Dallas Mavericks' latest announcements were unfortunate but inevitable. On Friday, Dallas announced to the public that they had waived Shooting Guard AJ Lawson, Center Jamarion Sharp, and Forward Emanuel Miller. Lawson, 24, was waived a little over a week ago from a standard, non-guaranteed deal and re-signed to a two-way contract.

It appears that the Dallas Mavericks want to open a two-way roster spot for Point Guard Jazian Gortman, but we'll see what happens in the coming days. Gortman, 21, is best known for leaving high school, W.J. Keenan in Columbia, South Carolina, to turn pro and join the NBA.

    Mavericks Prospects' Next Steps

Nothing is guaranteed, but the next steps for the three Dallas Mavericks prospects might be in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. Jamarion Sharp was the tallest player in college basketball last season. Sharp also had a solid interior presence in the preseason. It wouldn't be surprising if he was added to the Mavericks' NBA G League affiliate, the Texas Legends, roster.

The same could be said for Emanuel Miller, who started the preseason strong but didn't play much in the final two preseason games, as Mavericks Head Coach Jason Kidd reportedly ramped up towards the start of the regular season. Miller, 24, played five years of college basketball in the State of Texas with the first two at Texas A&M and the final three at TCU.

    Dallas Has Options

The Dallas Mavericks have some options now that they've waived Lawson and opened a two-way roster spot. The Mavericks promoted Gortman by signing him to a two-way contract, per ESPN's Tim MacMahon. He earned the contract, as he played well in the Mavericks' four preseason games. He averaged 10.3 points per game while shooting 51.6% from the field. He's expected to spend the majority of his time with the Texas Legends, but there's a chance that he could play for the Mavericks sometime.

Gortman's hard work seems to be paying off after he reportedly forwent a college basketball career to join the pros. He went undrafted in the 2023 NBA Draft but played for the YNG Dreamerz, Milwaukee Herd, and Rip City Remix before signing with the Mavericks for the 2024 NBA Summer League games. Dallas enters the 2024-25 NBA season with lofty expectations as their roster for the season is not yet set.
