Former NFL QB Jay Cutler Arrested For Weapon Possession and DUI

Jay Cutler is a controversial character. He is famous for being an NFL quarterback for 12 seasons from 2006 to 2017. Cutler primarily played for the Chicago Bears, even though he also stopped through Denver to be the Broncos quarterback, as well as the Miami Dolphins. The former QB is also a bit of a cultural icon, starting with having been born in the tiny town of Santa Claus, Indiana. He may be adding convict to this list as he has been arrested for weapon possession and driving under the influence. He is of course innocent until proven guilty. Let’s get into the details below!

    The Arrest

On October 17th, 2024, Jay Cutler was arrested in Franklin, Tennessee, in the evening. He was booked into the Williamson County Jail and was released on $5,000 bond. Cutler has been officially charged with DUI, failure to exercise due care to avoid a collision, implied consent, and possession of a handgun while under the influence.

Allegedly, Thursday night Jay Cutler was behind the wheel when he rear-ended another driver. The former QB attempted to bribe the other driver with $2,000 to not contact the police and attempted to leave the scene. The other driver wasn’t having it, and the police arrived shortly thereafter.

Cutler was allegedly slurring his words and unwilling to do field sobriety tests (which is everyone’s constitutional right in America). He was taken to a hospital and had a blood sample taken through a warrant to determine his level of intoxication. While searching Cutler’s vehicle, police found two guns. Including a loaded pistol.

    Cutler’s NFL Career

The Vanderbilt University graduate was drafted 11th overall by the Denver Bronco in the 2006 draft, being described by many as the third-best quarterback in a non-descript group of former NFL players. Despite being a good athlete in Denver, going to the Pro Bowl in 2008 even, Jay Cutler was traded to the Chicago Bears in 2008. This was a dream come true for the lifelong Chicago Bears fan. Apparently that was the go-to team for Santa Clause, Indiana residents.

Jay Cutler would spend eight seasons with the Chicago Bears. He is named one of the 100 greatest Bears of All-Time and has franchise records still in the teens for the Chicago Bears in the 2020s. After initially retiring in 2016, he would come back in 2017 to play for the Tennessee Titans after Ryan Tannehill was injured. Cutler played good ball, all things considered. He was in his late 30s and experienced cracked ribs and a concussion in his final season. Jay Cutler would officially hang up the cleats after the 2017-2018 season.

    Jay Cutler In Culture

Let’s be frank, athletes are celebrities in modern times. Being in the national football league automatically comes with fame. If you happen to be a suave quarterback, you’re a household name. Of course Jay Cutler’s appreciation for the public eye and questionable life choices helped him remain a household name. Business ventures like creating CUTS, a meat distribution company in 2021. a podcast called “Uncut,” launching a Nashville brewery in 2022, and being a founder member of Outsiders.com has also put his name on the entrepreneur map.

There was the South Park cartoon appearance, Magic 1 redid the song “baby come back” to request Cutler to come back after a thumb injury in 2011, and he is also the meme “Smokin’ Jay Cutler” that Aaron Rodgers referenced in 2014. Besides being a punchline, Cutler also had a bit of an acting career.

Jay Cutler appeared on Oprah’s Big Give in 2007 and also played himself in the comedy show “The League” with his ex-wife Kristin. The couple had a reality TV show featuring mostly his ex-wife called “Very Cavallari” for three seasons from 2018 to 2020. The show ended too soon to show the couple’s messy divorce. In the last few years he was in a 2022 documentary called “The Journey: A Diabetes Story” due to his own diabetic diagnosis. Last but not least, he was also a panelist on Inside the NFL in 2023.

    Conclusion

Jay Cutler has been in the hot seat before, even losing jobs over his media presence. Allegedly not vaccinating his kids, talking about voter fraud, and being critical of the COVID vaccine and masks in school during the pandemic had most of us rolling our eyes at another out-of-touch celebrity.

However, it’s not terribly unusual for former NFL players to be a little unique in their viewpoints. We appreciate what they do for the sport of football and for American culture in general—someone has to throw that ball and get concussions in front of thousands of bystanders each week. But when that hometown hero gets arrested for some pretty serious things, not even throwing a football good will keep him out of the public eye for less desirable reasons yet again.
