New York Mets Ride Offense To Game 5 Victory; Extend NLCS

The New York Mets defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 12-6 in Game 5 of the NLCS at Citi Field in Queens, New York to extend their 2024 season. New York Mets Starting Pitcher David Peterson found himself in instant trouble. He allowed the first two batters to reach base safely. Peterson was able to hunker down and get out of the inning unscathed. New York then came to bat in the bottom of the first and had their first two hitters also reach safely, but unlike the Dodgers, New York was able to capitalize. First Baseman Pete Alonso cracked a three-run home run to give New York an early 3-0 lead.

Peterson found himself in another jam in the top of the second but a wild pitch allowed a run to score. The New York Mets offense then came alive again in the bottom of the third as they put up five runs. A Starling Marte two-run double, a Francisco Alvarez RBI single, an RBI triple from Francisco Lindor, and an RBI single from Brandon Nimmo put New York up 8-1 through three innings. Los Angeles would apply the pressure in the top of the fourth, but a solo home run by Center Fielder Andy Pages was the only run scored. New York Relief Pitcher Reed Garrett got First Baseman Freddie Freeman to strike out to leave the bases loaded.

The New York Mets continued their offensive onslaught by tacking on another two runs to make it 10-2 after four innings. Tonight was the first time New York has scored 10+ runs since September 19. Los Angeles would refuse to go quietly into the New York night as Pages hit a three-run home run, his second of the night, in the top of the fifth to cut the Mets lead to 10-5. Pages joined Dodgers legend Duke Snider as the only Dodgers center fielders with two homers in a postseason game. Betts added a solo home run to cut into New York's lead again. Will the New York Mets be able to carry this momentum into Game 6?

New York Mets Offense Makes History

Just when it looked like New York would cough up the lead, they added a run in both the bottom of the sixth and the bottom of the eighth. New York's offense had a historic evening and dominated Dodgers Starting Pitcher Jack Flaherty who had their way with New York in Game 1. Flaherty surrendered eight earned runs over three innings of work. Relief Pitcher Brent Honeywell also failed poorly. He surrendered four earned runs over 4.2 innings. New York did not strikeout tonight for the first time since 2010 as well. After going 0-of-14 with RISP over the last two games, New York was 5-of-19 tonight in those situations.

New York's pitching staff, while shaky at times, settled down late to secure the victory. Peterson surrendered two earned runs over 3.2 innings. Relief Pitcher Ryne Stanek helped steady the ship as he surrendered one earned run over 2.1 innings. Closer Edwin Diaz then tossed two scoreless innings to send the NLCS back to California.

    Looking Ahead To Game 6

Game 6 of the NLCS will take place Sunday night back in Los Angeles at Dodgers Stadium. At the time of publication, neither team has announced a starting pitcher for the game. Both Los Angeles Dodgers Manager Dave Roberts and New York Mets Skipper Carlos Mendoza will use tomorrow's day off to survey their options before deciding on a starting pitcher.

The New York Mets will seemingly turn to Sean Manaea. He had great success against Los Angeles in Game 2. He surrendered two earned runs over five innings of work. Los Angeles will likely turn to a bevy of pitchers as a bullpen game will be LA's recipe for a Game 6 victory. New York will have all of the momentum as they head to Los Angeles for Game 6. Heading on the road down 3-2, New York will have no margin of error.
