New York Mets See Season Ended With Game 6 NLCS Loss

The New York Mets lost Game 6 of the NLCS tonight in Los Angeles, California 10-5 on Sunday night to send the Los Angeles Dodgers to the 2024 World Series. New York came out of the gates firing on all cylinders tonight. They took an early 1-0 on an RBI single by First Baseman Pete Alonso that was mishandled in the field and allowed Shortstop Francisco Lindor to score from third. Los Angeles responded in the bottom of the first with a two-run double from Shortstop Tommy Edman. Mets Starting Pitcher Sean Manaea was able to escape the jam with only two runs as he stranded runners on first and second to end the threat.

New York would leave the bases loaded in the top of the third and Los Angeles would make them pay in the bottom half of the inning. Edman and Catcher Will Smith both added two-run home runs to give Los Angeles a 6-1 lead through three innings of play. The Mets would respond with a two-run home run in the top of the fourth by Catcher Mark Vientos. With 14 RBI Vientos set a postseason record for the New York Mets. The Mets would leave the bases loaded again in the top of the sixth.

The Dodgers offense was not done yet as Designated Hitter Shohei Ohtani had an RBI single to make it 7-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning. Mets Catcher Francisco Alvarez hit a SAC fly to make it 7-4 Dodgers after the top of the seventh inning. Los Angeles added two runs in the bottom of the eighth thanks to an RBI double by Right Fielder Mookie Betts and a SAC fly by Left Fielder Teoscar Hernandez. Apropos of the New York Mets and their fighting spirit, Second Baseman Jeff McNeil added an RBI single in the top of the ninth inning. After a strong NLCS performance, how will Los Angeles fare in the 2024 World Series?

    New York Mets Sent Home

After scoring 12 runs to extend their season in Game 5, the offense of the New York Mets did not make the trip out west. They struggled with RISP during the NLCS, and tonight's game was no different. The New York Mets went 2-of-9 with RISP tonight in Los Angeles and left 13 runners on base. One of the strengths of this team heading into the NLCS, their clutch hitting, let them down over the six games in the NLCS.

New York's fate was sealed tonight following a miserable start from Manaea. After experiencing success against Los Angeles earlier in the series, he struggled tonight when his team needed him most. He surrendered five earned runs over two innings of work. New York Mets Manager Carlos Mendoza tried to piece together the remaining outs and did so with great success until late in the game. Mendoza turned to Closer Edwin Diaz and Starting Pitcher Kodai Senga to chip in during tonight's game. Following Maneea, New York's bullpen surrendered five earned runs over six innings.

Dodgers Skipper Dave Roberts used seven pitchers this evening to help propel the Dodgers to the World Series. He pushed the right buttons all game to help get Los Angeles through the NLCS. LA's pitching staff has suffered a rash of injuries in 2024 and Roberts now has them four wins away from the sport's biggest prize.

The Next Steps For Each Team

The Los Angeles Dodgers will remain in Los Angeles as they prepare to welcome the New York Yankees to town for Game 1 of the 2024 World Series on Friday. Los Angeles and New York, two of the league's most well-known franchises, are no strangers to facing one another in the World Series. They have faced off 11 times in the "Fall Classic." Their last World Series meeting was in 1981 which LA won in six games. New York is 8-3 overall against the Dodgers in the World Series. The Yankees are looking for their first title since 2009 while Los Angeles is aiming for their first World Series win since 2020.

The New York Mets had a very successful 2024 season. After struggling to begin the season, and being one of the league's hottest teams over the final four months of the regular season, making it to the NLCS was a triumph. New York ran into a Dodgers team that was playing better at this juncture of the season. New York, after facing playoff-like intensity in the weeks leading up to the MLB Playoffs, seemed to have run out of magic in this game.

The New York Mets enter an offseason full of question marks. Chief among them is whether the team will re-sign franchise cornerstone Pete Alonso. He is set to become a free agent this offseason. New York should hold their head high even after a tough loss to end their season. The New York Mets were two wins away from the World Series in a year that was supposed to be a rebuilding one. The New York Mets will look to build on 2024 as they set their sights on being a contender in the National League in 2025.
