Francesco Bagnaia Anticipates Track Limits Penalty

Francesco Bagnaia voiced his surprise in a nail-biting MotoGP Thai Grand Prix sprint as he expected Jorge Martin to receive a track limits penalty. Martin who is the Pramac Racing rider had gone off limits several times in the sprint and this made the reigning champion counter why the racer had not been penalized. The closeness of the competition and the fast rhythm of the race led to a decisive contest that put Bagnaia almost one position behind in terms of the overall standing with Martin leading him by 22 points.

Martin’s Story Across the Battle Field

From the fifth starting position after trying to overtake Francesco Bagnaia right at the start of the race at Turn 1, Jorge Martin had come out of the line and lost positions. Undeterred, Martin recovered from his earlier mistake and executed a precise overtaking maneuver on Bagnaia at Turn 7 during lap seven. However, this maneuver put Martin outside the circuit on the green-painted area past the curbs, and received his first track limit warning of the race.

Another infraction came on lap nine, which moved Martin nearer to a long-lap penalty. Watching the race meticulously, Francesco Bagnaia calculated four times when he believed that Martin went off the racing line. Even under MotoGP rules, three such infringements would warrant a long-lap penalty and, at least by the Dorna Sports lap-by-lap analysis, that is as many as Martin only got flagged. This confused Bagnaia, for the Italian was sure that Martin had gone off the track more than once.

Francesco Bagnaia: Intense Pace Poses Challenges in Cornering

Still, Francesco Bagnaia seemed happy with what happened; he admitted the pace in the sprint was very aggressive and both riders were fully committed. He pointed out that because of the high speed, the riders could lose control and take the corners dangerously, for instance, when Martin was trying to defend his position. Formerly, Bagnaia appreciated Martin’s work and acknowledged that such a race pace made it difficult to remain within the boundaries of the tracks.

This means that for him to win the championship Martins only needed to finish at least second in the remaining races of the season. What Bagnaia did, though, was realize early in the race that his shot at winning this particular sprint was fading fast. The champion pointed out that he had issues with braking, unlike in the morning when he took the pole session.

    Final Thoughts

Continuing the championship race into the next, Francesco Bagnaia still focuses on gaining points so he can try to overtake Martin, who is now leading the standings. According to Bagnaia, Martin will not sit back and race conservatively, a mentality Francesco Bagnaia believes the Pramac rival will want victories which will make every race important as the championship nears its climax. The battle appears set to heat up and that will require the two riders to deliver flawless rides to achieve the required objectives.
