The New York Yankees Backs Are Against the Wall For Game 3

After dropping both games in Los Angeles, the New York Yankees' backs are against the wall in the closest thing to a “must-win” game three. As all Yankees fans know, only one team in Major League baseball history has overcome a 3-0 deficit in a postseason series to win. That team, of course, was the 2004 Boston Red Sox who came back from 3-0 down to defeat the New York Yankees. Ironically, Dave Roberts, the current Los Angeles Dodgers manager, started the comeback by stealing second off Mariano Rivera in the ninth inning of game four. The Yankees hope to pay back karma starting with game three in the Bronx.

Some New York Yankees Bats Need To Wake Up

In the 19 innings, the Yankees offense has managed to score only five runs. Aaron Judge is hitting .111 for the series (1-of-9) with six strikeouts. In game two, Yankees hitters not named Juan Soto or Giancarlo Stanton went 1-of-23. Only Jazz Chisholm Jr. reached base via hit aside from Soto and Stanton. Home runs by Stanton in game one and by Soto in game two account for three of the Yankees total five runs. Five of the 14 Yankees hits in the series belong to Soto and Stanton. The rest of the Yankees lineup has managed just nine hits in two games. Someone else is going to need to contribute if the Yankees are going to mount a comeback.

Clarke Schmidt Looks To Right the Ship

Gerrit Cole’s game one start was wasted on one pitch to Freddie Freeman by Nestor Cortes with two outs in the ninth inning of game one. Carlos Rodon was shaky and couldn’t get the job done in game two. Responsibility for righting the ship and getting the New York Yankees back on path falls to Clarke Schmidt in game three.

Schmidt has pitched 9.1 innings in the postseason and has a 3.86 ERA, and 1.29 WHIP with 6 K, 3 walks, and 1 home run allowed. He’s been serviceable as a number three starter. In game three of the World Series, he needs to be baseline serviceable with upside to log six or seven innings to get to the bullpen. Of all unlikely heroes, Schmidt is set to join the team of unlikely heroes in the postseason. In game three, all facets of the game, hitting, pitching, and fielding, need to click. The whole season is on the line in game three tonight.

Yankees are Favored

Going home to the Bronx, the New York Yankees are favored to win game three. Betting odds have the Yankees -142 and ESPN has the Bombers as 60.7% favorites. For fans of the New York Yankees, no percentage of prognosis will be high enough as the season boils down to a game three in the Bronx. Backs against the wall, the New York Yankees need a win in the worst way.
