New York Islanders Fall 6-3 To Florida Panthers In Terrible Game

The New York Islanders had a terrible game, after a promising start, against the Florida Panthers at home in Elmont, New York on Saturday night. The Islanders were leading Florida 3-0 and then gave up six unanswered goals. The Islanders wore down against Florida in the second half of a back-to-back set of games. Six goals given up after jumping out to a 3-0 lead amounts to a big defeat in the National Hockey League. Florida is a first-place team, so maybe the loss was expected. How did the New York Islanders cough up the lead?

    A Quick Lead

The New York Islanders jumped out to a 3-0 lead against Florida by 11:41 of the first period. One of those three goals was by Dennis Cholowski, who was filling in on defense for an injured Alexander Romonov. The game looked good for the Islanders after they jumped out to a quick lead.

It looked like the Islanders were going to win the game against Florida after the Islanders beat the New Jersey Devils. But, there was too much time left and the Islanders surrendered six unanswered goals to lose the game 6-3. The Islanders wore down as was the case. The Islanders were only 1-6-3 in the back half of back-to-back games last season, so maybe the loss was not that surprising.

    Wearing Down

After the Islanders took a 3-0 lead against Florida with almost fifty minutes left in the game it was a safe bet they would surrender the lead. There was lots of time left in the game, and the recent history for the New York Islanders has been poor in the back half of back-to-back games. The Islanders are old which could be why they wear down in the second half of back-to-back games. On that last point, eleven players on the Islanders roster are thirty years old or older. The Islanders are one of the oldest teams in the National Hockey League. This fact does not help them when the schedule becomes demanding.

Florida Star Matthew Tkachuk Scored Twice

There were several players on the Florida Panthers roster who are skilled, but perhaps the most dangerous is Matthew Tkachuk. Tkachuk is the son of former National Hockey League player Keith Tkachuk. Matthew Tkachuk's brother also plays in the National Hockey League. Matthew Tkachuk is one of the most gifted goal-scorers in the National Hockey League. He scored twice for Florida on Saturday as the Islanders had no answer for him.

    Scoring Summary

Dennis Cholowski scored first for the Islanders. Then Kyle Palmieri and Brock Nelson scored, giving the Islanders a 3-0 lead. Sam Reinhart scored for Florida in the first period. The period ended with the Islanders having a 3-1 lead. Florida scored two goals in the second period. Tkachuk scored the first of his two goals and Mackie Samoskevich also scored. Florida scored three more goals in the third period. Sam Bennett scored, Matthew Tkachuk scored his second goal, and Gustav Forsling added an empty net goal.

    Conclusion

The Islanders let the Florida Panthers run wild on them after taking a 3-0 lead. Six unanswered goals are embarrassing and virtually unheard of. It looked like the Islanders were going to earn a victory against the Panthers after beating the New Jersey Devils the day before. Four points against two first-place teams would have been a great sign. The Islanders will just have to settle for two points in this game.

As far as an upcoming schedule goes, the Islanders play another back-to-back next week. They host the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday, October 29 and they play a game on the road against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Wednesday, October 30. Then they travel to Buffalo to take on the Sabres on November 1. The Islanders play at the rival New York Rangers on November 3.
