Oregon Sen. Wyden: Fate of Kroger-Albertsons merger could be decided in days
U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden D-Oregon, a vocal opponent of a proposed merger of Kroger and Albertsons grocery stores, said key decisions regarding the merger could arrive within days. The Kroger chain includes Safeway, Albertson and QFC. Speaking from the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Wyden told the Portland Tribune that a lawsuit to block the merger and a counter-suit are both winding their way through courts. ...
Farmers Fought a Factory Farm and Won
Kendra Kimbirauskas and Starla Tillinghast are farmers who live in Scio, a small town in the rural Willamette Valley in Oregon. Home to covered bridges, seed crops, grazing lands, hazelnuts, timber, and small, well-tended dairies, this small farming community wasn’t against raising animals to feed people. But a concentrated animal feeding operation (CAFO) would have completely changed the nature of their community. After learning about how other communities had been affected by large-scale chicken farms, Starla, Kendra, and a handful of their neighbors started Farmers Against Foster Farms and lobbied state and local government to create new regulations that would preserve local farms while keeping CAFOs out.

For homebuyers impacted by racist housing covenants, Washington state offers zero-interest loans
A new program aimed at reducing the impact of racist housing deeds, which once forbade selling homes to various minority groups in Washington state, is taking shape. The Covenant Homeownership Program, run by the state’s Housing Finance Commission, offers prospective homebuyers from those communities no-interest loans of up to $150,000 to cover down payments — one of the biggest hurdles to buying a home — and closing costs. Borrowers repay the loan upon selling or refinancing of their home. So far, 34 people from the Puget Sound area have applied for zero-interest down payment loans through the Covenant Homeownership Program, with six applicants in the mortgage closing phase as of Thursday. While the passage of the federal Fair Housing Act in 1968 stripped away the power of racist housing covenants, the effects of that exclusion span several generations and are still felt today.
