He had been a substitute conductor for several events in 2016, and officially took the job as director in 2018. Hege says since COVID, the audiences and the programs keep getting better and better. He says he renewed his contract because of the team around him and he sees great potential over the next 5 years. ‘I’m particularly excited about the five-year plan because I think it helps us to be able to plan artistically more broadly. So, more years in advance. I think when one has more lead time, one can do more significant projects,’ said Hege. Hege takes pride in selecting music for everyone. He says the orchestra has been playing the Beethoven symphonies in order, but every once in a while, he’ll throw in a new, contemporary piece that steals the show. The orchestra’s symphonic series will kick off again in September with the program ‘Restless Oceans,’ with the Pops concerts beginning in late October.”
