When approaching an intersection as the traffic light turns yellow, drivers face the decision to either stop or proceed through the intersection. While stopping is the safer option to avoid potential crashes, many drivers may choose to proceed to reach their destinations faster. Here’s what you need to know about the legality of running a yellow light in North Carolina.

Can You Get a Ticket for Running a Yellow Light in NC?

In North Carolina, drivers cannot be ticketed solely for running a yellow light. According to Charlotte-based law firm Browning & Long, state law considers a yellow light as a warning that the light will soon turn red. However, if the light turns red before you enter the intersection, you could face penalties.

    • Red Light Violation: If a light is red by the time you run it, you could receive a fine of up to $100 and points on your driving and insurance records.

    Flashing Yellow Lights

When encountering a flashing yellow light at an intersection, drivers should:

    • Proceed with Caution: Yield the right-of-way to vehicles already in or approaching the intersection state law says.
    • Flashing Red Lights: At intersections with flashing red lights, drivers are required to stop and yield to approaching vehicles, similar to a four-way stop.

Legal Exceptions for Running Red Lights

While cars must always stop at red lights, North Carolina law provides an exception for motorcyclists under certain conditions:

    • Safe-on-Red Law for Motorcyclists: If a motorcycle waits at a red light for at least three minutes and the light doesn’t change, the rider can proceed through the light carefully, provided there are no approaching vehicles. This law addresses the issue of traffic signal sensors not always detecting motorcycles.

By understanding these rules, drivers in North Carolina can make informed decisions at intersections and avoid potential fines and penalties.
