Across the country, different states have different rules of the road for drivers, including North Carolina. One of the common rules that differs is when you can and can’t turn at a red light.

It’s common for drivers to want to head off to their destination without waiting for the stoplight to turn green, especially if there’s no oncoming traffic. But is it legal to do so in all scenarios? Not in North Carolina.

    Here’s what to know.

When is it Legal to Turn at a Red Light?

    Right Turns:

    • Permitted: According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation Drivers can turn right at a red light after coming to a complete stop, unless a sign explicitly prohibits it.
    • Safety First: Always check for oncoming traffic and pedestrians before making the turn.

    Left Turns:

    • Not Permitted: Left turns on red are illegal in North Carolina. Drivers must wait for a green light, even if there is no oncoming traffic.
      • Comparison: Unlike many other states where left turns on red are allowed under certain conditions (e.g., turning onto a one-way street from another one-way street), North Carolina does not permit this.

Consequences of Running a Red Light

    • Fines: Running a red light can result in a fine of up to $100.
    • Points: Violations will add points to your driving record and can also impact your insurance rates.
