Big cities with big paychecks might seem appealing to young people, but new graduates may want to think small to boost their chances of success.

New research reveals that smaller cities could offer better opportunities for recent grads to find a job, get hired, and actually afford to live there.

According to a study by the ADP Research Institute, Raleigh and Charlotte, North Carolina, are among the best cities in the country for college grads, with Raleigh taking the top spot and Charlotte ranking at #5.

The ADP Research Institute analyzed 55 metro areas, considering factors like average wages, overall affordability, and hiring rates.

Raleigh, North Carolina, stood out as the best city for new graduates, thanks to its top hiring rate, proximity to three major universities, and the presence of around 300 science and technology companies. It also offers wages in the 80th percentile while remaining relatively affordable.

On the other hand, Rochester, New York, was ranked as the worst city for new grads due to its low hiring rate.

Here’s the top 10 list of the best cities for new grads:

    1. Raleigh, North Carolina
    2. Baltimore, Maryland
    3. Austin, Texas
    4. Atlanta, Georgia
    5. Charlotte, North Carolina
    6. New York, New York
