Move-in day for college freshmen is an emotional experience, both for students and their parents. Lori Miggins, a mom from North Carolina, felt this deeply when she dropped off her daughter, Taylor, at Appalachian State University.

Instead of leaving after unpacking, Lori spent the night in Taylor’s dorm room at her daughter's request.

Taylor, who was on campus early for cheerleading, appreciated her mom’s support, especially since her roommate hadn’t arrived yet. “Having my mom there helped my anxiety so much,” Taylor shared.

Lori, an online health and wellness coach, found the extra time with Taylor comforting, making the eventual goodbye a bit easier. They explored the campus together, met Taylor’s friends, and ate at the dining hall, helping Taylor acclimate to her new environment.

However, when Lori shared their experience on Instagram, it sparked mixed reactions. Some praised the gesture as a beautiful memory, while others criticized it as overstepping boundaries.

Laurie Kramer, a psychology professor at Northeastern University, emphasizes that move-in day should be part of a long-term transition, with conversations starting during high school. She advises parents to support their children’s independence and resist the urge to micromanage.

Despite the debate, Lori says Taylor is happily adjusting to college life, and that’s what matters most.
