Despite 13% of Americans living with disabilities, stigma and discrimination remain persistent issues. With 44 million people affected, understanding and addressing their needs is more critical than ever.

To highlight the necessary accommodations in North Carolina, accessiBe used Census Bureau data.

Disabilities are something nearly everyone will experience eventually. Almost 25% of Americans aged 65-74, and nearly 50% of those 75 and older, have some form of disability. As the population ages, accessibility will become increasingly important.

Since the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was passed in 1990, accessibility has significantly improved. However, disparities still exist, particularly in earnings and poverty rates. While workers with disabilities saw record employment gains in 2023, they still earned significantly less—about $31,000 annually compared to $44,000 for those without disabilities.

In North Carolina, 13.7% of people have disabilities, with mobility issues being the most common. Nationally, 13.4% of Americans report disabilities, with mobility being the most prevalent. Accessibility improvements include adding ramps, elevators, and digital features like text enlargement.

Cognitive disabilities also impact 5.6%, prompting accessibility improvements in communication methods and website design. Hearing impairments affect 3.8%, and their representation in media is growing. Visual impairments impact 2.5%, with advancements in assistive technology aiding those affected.

Addressing these needs is essential for eliminating bias and improving accessibility for everyone.
