    These States send the most people to North Carolina

    Fewer Americans relocated in 2022, according to the latest census data, but for those who did, 1 in 5 moved to a different state.

    As population growth returns to pre-pandemic levels, the Southern states have continued to see a rise in new residents, while the Northeast experienced the most significant population declines, especially in New York and Pennsylvania.

    These patterns persisted into 2023, with Vermont, Washington D.C., South Carolina, and Arkansas leading the way in inbound moves, according to United Van Lines' annual movers study.

    Using data from the Census Bureau, a list of states that contributed the most new residents to North Carolina in 2022. Here are the top five:

    #5. California

    • 22,891 people moved to North Carolina from California, making up 6.70% of new residents from other states. California was the 11th most common state for people leaving for North Carolina.

    #4. New York

    • 25,024 people relocated to North Carolina from New York, accounting for 7.33% of new arrivals. New York ranked as the 7th most common state people left for North Carolina.

    #3. South Carolina

    • 27,961 people made the short move from South Carolina, representing 8.19% of new residents. It was the top state for people moving out to North Carolina.

    #2. Virginia

    • 33,919 people moved to North Carolina from Virginia, making up 9.93% of new residents. Virginia also ranked first as the state most often left for North Carolina.

    #1. Florida

    • 34,920 people moved to North Carolina from Florida, comprising 10.22% of new residents. Florida was the 3rd most common state for people moving away to North Carolina.

    These trends reflect the growing appeal of North Carolina as a destination for newcomers from across the country.
