Once a bustling textile village, Henry River Mill Village in Hickory, North Carolina, now stands as a haunting reminder of the region’s industrial past.

This eerie, abandoned place draws visitors year-round for its rich history, unique lodging, and paranormal investigations, making it a must-see destination for history buffs and thrill-seekers alike.

Founded in 1905, Henry River Mill Village thrived for decades as a cotton yarn manufacturer. The village boasted worker houses, a two-story boarding house, a bridge, a power-producing dam, a brick company store, and the original three-story brick mill.

The mill, unfortunately, was burned to the ground after a believed lightning strike in 1977, just after being purchased by Wade R. Sheppard, but its legacy continues through the village’s preserved structures.

In 2019, the Henry River Mill Village Historic District earned a well-deserved spot on the National Register of Historic Places.

The remaining buildings, including the iconic two-story brick company store and around 20 of the original 35 mill houses, offer visitors a glimpse into the lives of the workers and their families. The village has also become a popular location for paranormal investigations, where visitors can explore the lingering spirits of the past.

For film enthusiasts, Henry River Mill Village is notable for its role as "District 12" in The Hunger Games, adding to its allure.

Whether you’re interested in history, the paranormal, or simply love unique travel destinations, Henry River Mill Village offers a captivating experience. Plan your visit, take a historic tour, or even stay overnight to immerse yourself in the eerie charm of one of North Carolina’s best ghost towns.
